LANDrop was my preferred tool for transferring files across my Android phone, iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Over time, I encountered issues with device discoverability and slow transfer speeds, especially between my Mac and Android devices, necessitating alternative methods. This led me to adopt LocalSend across all my devices. LocalSend operates on the same principle as LANDrop, leveraging local Wi-Fi for transfers, but it has proven to be more reliable. Its active development ensures consistent updates and fixes for reported issues. I particularly appreciate LocalSend's ability to stop and restart its server to resolve discoverability problems, its detailed transfer history, and the option for manual file transfers when network configurations restrict device visibility.
Transitioning from Syncthing to Resilio Sync: Enhanced File Synchronization Across Devices
Accessing files stored on my Mac from my phones and Windows PC was previously managed by Syncthing. However, its Android counterpart, Syncthing-Fork, began experiencing issues like increased battery consumption and aggressive background termination on my Android device. This prompted my shift to Resilio Sync. While not open-source or entirely free like Syncthing, Resilio Sync offers a more polished interface and a simpler setup process. Its faster file synchronization is crucial for my extensive collection of folders and files. The selective syncing feature is highly beneficial, allowing me to browse shared folders and download only the necessary files to each device, thereby conserving storage space. Moreover, Resilio Sync's native iOS app ensures seamless synchronization with my iPhone.
Upgrading from Google Authenticator to Ente Auth: Prioritizing Security with E2E Encryption
Google Authenticator has long been my choice for two-factor authentication. Although it has evolved to include essential features like cloud sync and screen lock, the absence of end-to-end encryption remained a concern. My discovery of Ente Auth last month, while reviewing 2FA applications, led me to replace Google Authenticator. Ente Auth's primary advantage is its zero-knowledge E2E encryption, guaranteeing that only I can access my authentication codes. Furthermore, Ente Auth offers desktop applications for macOS, Linux, and and Windows, eliminating the need to constantly reach for my phone to retrieve 2FA codes.
Shifting from Spotify to Apple Music: A Quest for High-Fidelity Audio
Despite years of loyalty to Spotify, I found myself frequently switching between it and Apple Music in recent months. Spotify's superior recommendation algorithm was often the reason for my return. However, my increasing use of Apple Music on my Mac, particularly its high-resolution playback, ultimately convinced me to make a full transition. Replacing Files by Google with Solid Explorer: Advanced File Management Capabilities
Files by Google is often pre-installed as the default file manager on Android devices, but I've always considered it suitable only for basic file operations. For my personal Android phones, I previously replaced it with Solid Explorer. This year, I extended this practice to my review units, making Solid Explorer my go-to file manager. Solid Explorer offers a wealth of advanced features that streamline daily operations. Its dual-panel mode simplifies comparing storage locations and transferring items. Additionally, the option to automatically clear trash items periodically is a useful convenience. Solid Explorer's high degree of customization allows me to tailor its appearance and functionality to my preferences.
Swapping AccuWeather for Breezy Weather: A Cleaner, Customizable Weather Experience
AccuWeather was my long-standing favorite weather application on Android, primarily due to its detailed radar, interactive maps, and precise daily and hourly forecasts. However, the app became increasingly cluttered with advertisements, leading me to frequently close it in favor of my phone's default weather application. Fortunately, I discovered Breezy Weather, an open-source, free, and feature-rich alternative. Unlike AccuWeather, Breezy Weather is ad-free. Beyond its clean interface, Breezy Weather's ability to select from various weather databases allows for more accurate local forecasts. It also offers extensive customization options, letting me configure the data displayed and its order. The card-based display of information on the main screen maintains a clean interface, with detailed information accessible via a tap. Breezy Weather also provides a diverse selection of aesthetically pleasing and informative widgets, many of which are highly customizable to suit individual preference
