Progressive has historically leveraged aggregate reinsurance to bolster its financial resilience against accumulating losses. The updated traditional aggregate catastrophe excess-of-loss coverage for 2025 now provides $175 million in protection, a slight decrease from the previous year's $185 million. This traditional cover is structured into two layers: the initial layer offers up to $75 million in protection for losses exceeding a threshold between $450 million and $475 million, excluding named tropical storms and hurricanes. The subsequent layer provides an additional $100 million in aggregate reinsurance, activating after losses surpass $525 million, and uniquely includes named tropical storm and hurricane events.
The standout innovation in Progressive's 2025 renewals is its embrace of parametric coverage for severe convective storms (SCS). This marks the first instance the insurer has adopted a parametric product, underscoring a growing industry trend toward more defined and objective triggers for payouts. This specific parametric agreement activates for accumulated SCS losses beyond a $665 million retention, furnishing Progressive with an additional $15 million in coverage. The nature of parametric triggers, being based on predefined event parameters rather than actual damage assessment, offers the potential for quicker claims settlement and more accurate alignment with the insurer's historical loss experience from these specific perils, thereby enhancing the overall efficacy and responsiveness of its protection.
Beyond these aggregate covers, Progressive also fortified its primary catastrophe tower, securing $2 billion in coverage. This extensive protection is structured with varying retentions: $200 million for storms outside Florida and a significantly lower $75 million for events within Florida. When factoring in the Florida Hurricane Catastrophe Fund (FHCF) protection, the company’s total coverage for a single storm event in Florida expands to approximately $2.2 billion, demonstrating a robust and layered approach to managing its catastrophic exposures.
