PERILS, a prominent entity in catastrophe data aggregation, has recently revised its assessment of insured losses stemming from the devastating Victoria bushfires of January 2026. The updated figure now stands at a substantial AU$860 million. This adjustment represents the third upward revision since the initial evaluation, underscoring the ongoing impact and thorough data collection efforts following the widespread conflagration.

The initial estimate for the event, which spanned from January 7th to 13th, 2026, was released by PERILS in late February, six weeks post-event, at AU$786 million. Subsequently, a second assessment in April elevated the total to AU$810 million. The latest increase to AU$860 million highlights the continued analysis and more precise quantification of the financial repercussions.

PERILS’ methodology for calculating these losses in Australia involves a meticulous collection of data, segmented by postcode and across various business lines, specifically property and motor hull. This comprehensive approach ensures a detailed and accurate representation of the financial damage incurred by the insurance sector. The breakdown of losses reveals that personal lines property claims constitute 30% of the total, commercial lines property claims account for a significant 68%, and motor vehicle losses make up the remaining 2%.

The January 2026 bushfires in Victoria, located in southeastern Australia, were characterized by over 30 major outbreaks. These fires scorched approximately 400,000 hectares, inflicting widespread destruction, particularly in the central and northern regions. The conditions that fueled these fires included extreme heat, arid vegetation, powerful winds, and various ignition sources such as lightning and human activities. The catastrophe resulted in the destruction of approximately 900 buildings, significant disruption to vital infrastructure, and tragically, one fatality.

Looking ahead, PERILS has indicated that a further updated estimate of the insured market losses from these bushfires is anticipated to be released on January 13th, 2027, marking a full twelve months after the event concluded. Darryl Pidcock, the Head of Asia Pacific at PERILS, emphasized the detailed nature of this report, noting its similarity to the extensive analysis conducted after the 2019 'Black Summer' bushfires in Australia. He underscored the importance of such insights in enhancing the insurance industry's capacity to comprehend and model bushfire risks, especially in preparation for future dry and hot summer seasons.

The repeated upward adjustments in the estimated insured losses for the Victoria bushfires serve as a critical reminder of the severe financial implications of natural disasters. This meticulous data aggregation and reporting by PERILS provide invaluable information for insurers and risk modelers, fostering a deeper understanding of catastrophe risk and aiding in the development of more robust risk management strategies for the future.
