This development comes in the wake of a significant legal ruling involving Apple and Epic Games that compels Apple to permit developers to include links to alternative payment methods within their apps without being subject to Apple’s commission. Previously, users subscribing to creators on Patreon had no choice but to use Apple’s in-app purchase system. The new update now allows patrons to make payments via the web using various methods such as credit cards, Venmo, PayPal, and even Apple Pay. This change is expected to redirect many customers away from Apple’s in-app purchases towards direct website transactions, reducing fees for creators.
On Monday, Patreon launched version 125.5.0 of its iOS app, which includes this enhanced checkout experience. Users can now opt for web-based payments, offering greater convenience and flexibility. While the option to use Apple’s in-app purchase remains available, it is presented in much smaller text beneath the prominent "Join" button. This subtle design choice encourages users to choose the web-based payment method over Apple's traditional route. According to Patreon, U.S. users should start seeing these changes within 24 hours after updating their app.
This update aligns with a broader shift following a court decision on April 30. The ruling mandated that Apple could no longer prohibit developers from linking to external payment systems while still charging commissions. Consequently, Apple adjusted its App Store guidelines, enabling apps like Spotify and Amazon Kindle to direct users to external websites for direct payments. Initially, Apple set a November 2025 deadline for all creators to switch to its iOS in-app purchase system or face removal from the App Store.
