A significant move by Uber signals its intent to broaden its footprint in international markets. The company has secured an 85% controlling interest in Trendyol Go, a prominent online meal and grocery delivery service based in Istanbul, for approximately $700 million in cash. This acquisition provides Uber with immediate market share in Turkey's food delivery sector, where it currently only operates ride-hailing services. Announced just before Uber's first-quarter earnings report, this deal reassures investors about the company's growth potential amidst challenges posed by economic factors such as projected consumer spending declines due to tariffs. Furthermore, this strategic purchase aligns with Uber’s ongoing efforts to explore partnerships in autonomous vehicle technology across various business verticals.
Trendyol Go, part of the larger Trendyol Group—a fashion and retail e-commerce platform majority-owned by Alibaba—has demonstrated remarkable growth. In 2024 alone, the company facilitated over 200 million orders, resulting in $2 billion in gross bookings, marking a 50% increase from the previous year. With a network exceeding 90,000 restaurants and supported by nearly 19,000 couriers, Trendyol Go offers a robust infrastructure that complements Uber's existing operations. Upon the deal's completion expected in the latter half of 2025, users will continue accessing services via the Trendyol Go app while gradually integrating key functionalities from Uber Eats.
Meanwhile, Uber faces stiff competition domestically in the U.S., particularly from DoorDash. Earlier this year, Uber initiated legal action against DoorDash, accusing it of engaging in anticompetitive practices. However, DoorDash has contested these claims, urging courts to dismiss the lawsuit. Coincidentally, DoorDash recently announced substantial acquisitions in Europe, acquiring Deliveroo for $3.86 billion and SevenRooms for $1.2 billion, further intensifying the rivalry between the two giants.
In light of these developments, Uber's acquisition not only underscores its commitment to expanding globally but also reflects its adaptive strategy in response to competitive pressures. By leveraging the established presence of Trendyol Go, Uber aims to enhance its offerings within Turkey while positioning itself for future innovations through integration with its broader ecosystem.
