MS Amlin, a prominent global re/insurer headquartered in Lloyd's, has strategically bolstered its Asia Pacific operations with the appointment of Darren Toh as a Senior Underwriter. Toh, an accomplished expert in insurance-linked securities (ILS) and a former executive at Nephila Capital, joins the company as part of its ongoing regional expansion and investment in growth. His arrival is expected to significantly enhance MS Amlin's capabilities, particularly in developing its reinsurance property catastrophe portfolio and supporting future sidecar transactions, an area where the firm has demonstrated considerable activity and success in recent years.
This key personnel addition reflects MS Amlin's commitment to strengthening its expertise and market presence in the dynamic Asia Pacific region. Toh's wealth of experience from one of the world's leading ILS managers, Nephila Capital, will be instrumental in navigating complex market dynamics and identifying new opportunities. His role will not only focus on underwriting but also on leveraging his extensive background to contribute to the firm's strategic initiatives, including the successful management and growth of its collateralized reinsurance sidecar vehicles, such as the recently expanded Phoenix Re.
Strategic Leadership and Regional Expansion
MS Amlin, a leading global re/insurer with roots in the Lloyd's market, has made a significant appointment in its Asia Pacific division, naming Darren Toh as a Senior Underwriter. Toh, a seasoned professional in insurance-linked securities (ILS), previously held leadership positions at Nephila Capital, one of the largest and most established ILS managers globally. His recruitment is a strategic move to reinforce MS Amlin's regional presence and drive its growth initiatives in the Asia Pacific market. Toh's expertise is anticipated to play a crucial role in advancing the company's reinsurance property catastrophe portfolio and in facilitating future sidecar transactions, building on MS Amlin's recent successes in this domain.
Darren Toh's journey in the ILS sector spans nearly a decade, primarily with Nephila Capital. He began his tenure as an intern on the research team at Nephila Advisors in San Francisco, later transitioning to a full-time role as a Junior Portfolio Analyst at Nephila Capital's Nashville office in 2017. Over the years, Toh advanced through various key positions, including Portfolio Analyst, Portfolio Strategist, and Senior Portfolio Strategist, gaining extensive oversight of insurance and reinsurance-linked investment portfolios. Most recently, he served as Head of Insurance and Senior Underwriter (Treaty) at Nephila. His new role at MS Amlin, based in Singapore, will see him reporting directly to William Ho, CEO of MS Amlin APAC. Toh's profound industry knowledge and experience will be invaluable, particularly in supporting the expansion of the firm's reinsurance property catastrophe portfolio and in executing successful collateralized reinsurance sidecar initiatives, such as the Phoenix Re vehicle, which recently achieved its largest renewal to date at $90 million for 2025.
Building a Robust Asia Pacific Team
In a concerted effort to enhance its operational capabilities and expand its market footprint in the Asia Pacific region, MS Amlin has not only welcomed Darren Toh but has also announced two additional key appointments. Yosuke Yasuda and Amirul (PJ) Ashraf are joining the APAC branch as Senior Underwriter and Underwriter, respectively, further strengthening the team's expertise. These strategic hires underscore MS Amlin's commitment to cultivating a robust and skilled workforce capable of addressing the diverse challenges and opportunities within the regional insurance and reinsurance landscape.
Yosuke Yasuda brings a wealth of experience from Aon, where he served as Head of Casualty for Asia and China, leading growth initiatives and advising cedants across the region. Prior to his role at Aon, Yasuda spent 17 years at Swiss Re as a Casualty Lead Underwriter. His appointment is effective October 13, 2025, and he will also report to William Ho. Amirul (PJ) Ashraf, joining on January 5, 2026, previously worked at Malaysian Re, focusing on international underwriting, risk, and capital management. He will report to Ee Voon Teh, Underwriter, and is expected to contribute significantly with his deep expertise. William Ho, CEO of MS Amlin APAC, expressed enthusiasm for these appointments, highlighting that Darren, Yosuke, and PJ's combined technical knowledge and client insights will be instrumental in accelerating growth and fostering innovation across the Asia Pacific region, thereby expanding the firm's capabilities.
