The catastrophe bond market is currently witnessing a period of remarkable expansion, with new data revealing a significant uptick in activity. As of September 2025, a total of 95 catastrophe bond issuances have been recorded in the Artemis Deal Directory, a figure that already equals the full-year record established in 2023. This rapid pace suggests that 2025 is poised to set a new benchmark for the number of such transactions.

Beyond the sheer volume of deals, the average size of catastrophe bond issuances has also seen a notable increase this year, a development that, while impressive, aligns with the overall surge in market activity. Interestingly, even with a recent resurgence in private catastrophe bonds, the number of 144A catastrophe bonds analyzed has reached an unprecedented level. Of the 95 new deals identified, 68 are full Rule 144A issuances, with the remaining 27 being privately placed transactions. This year's 144A deals have already surpassed the 2023 record for natural catastrophe bonds, indicating a shift in market composition.

The combined total issuance across all tracked catastrophe bonds is nearing $18.6 billion year-to-date, with 144A bonds contributing almost $18.1 billion to this sum. With over three months remaining in the year and a strong pipeline anticipated for the fourth quarter, the market is highly likely to exceed the $20 billion milestone for both metrics. This sustained growth, coupled with potentially record-high average deal sizes and triple-digit transaction numbers, underscores the robustness of the catastrophe bond market, strong investor interest in insurance-linked opportunities, and the operational efficiency of market participants in managing a high volume of deals.

This impressive performance of the catastrophe bond market in 2025 highlights its resilience and growing importance in the financial landscape. The increasing number and size of issuances demonstrate a strong, positive outlook for risk transfer mechanisms. This trend not only signifies the market's maturity but also its capacity to adapt and innovate, providing essential solutions for clients and investors alike. It reflects a dynamic environment where foresight and collaboration are paramount in navigating evolving financial demands and risk exposures.
