Soon, users will have the capability to generate a highly realistic digital avatar of themselves. This upcoming feature, slated for release in December for Workplace subscribers, will enable individuals to attend virtual conferences with a polished, AI-generated likeness, even when they might not be physically prepared for a live camera appearance. This means that users can maintain a professional image without the need for immediate grooming.
Creating and Customizing Your Digital Self
The process of creating a personal AI avatar will be straightforward. Users will simply upload a photograph or capture an image directly through the Zoom application. Once the platform processes the image to generate the avatar, participants will be able to personalize their digital representation with various professional attire options. Furthermore, these avatars are designed to mirror the user's movements and speech in real-time, creating a dynamic and interactive virtual presence during meetings.
Advancing Beyond Pre-recorded AI Interactions
While Zoom previously introduced AI avatars for pre-recorded messages, this new development marks a significant step forward. It allows for live, interactive participation via an AI clone, pushing the boundaries of virtual interaction. This aligns with Zoom CEO Eric Yuan's vision, articulated in a 2024 interview, of a future where individuals possess a "digital twin." Such an AI agent would be capable of representing users in various tasks, including attending meetings and managing email correspondence, signifying a move towards greater automation and virtual presence.
Ensuring Authenticity and Transparency with AI Avatars
To prevent misuse and maintain a secure virtual environment, Zoom is implementing several protective measures for its photorealistic avatar feature. According to Smita Hashim, Zoom's chief product officer, the platform will utilize "live camera authentication" to verify that the person behind the avatar is indeed the one whose image was uploaded. Additionally, "in-meeting tile notices" will be displayed to clearly indicate when an AI avatar is being used, ensuring transparency among participants. These protocols are still under development, with specifics regarding enrollment and authentication potentially evolving prior to the general release.
Breaking Language Barriers with Real-time Translation
Beyond the introduction of AI avatars, Zoom is also rolling out real-time voice translation capabilities. This update, also scheduled for December, will leverage AI to instantly translate spoken language during meetings. This feature will enable participants to listen to speakers in their preferred language, fostering seamless communication across diverse linguistic backgrounds. Initially, the service will support a range of languages including English, German, Chinese, French, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, Portuguese, and Italian, with more expected to be added.
Enhanced AI Assistant Capabilities
Furthermore, Zoom is upgrading its AI assistant with new functionalities. This advanced assistant will soon be able to autonomously schedule meetings and generate video clips. Commencing this month, users will have the flexibility to deploy the assistant in various settings, including in-person meetings and on other popular platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Google Meet, where it can efficiently record notes and facilitate other administrative tasks.
