WindBorne Systems Secures $37M to Enhance AI Weather Forecasting

Founded in 2019, WindBorne initially focused on collecting novel weather data through its cost-effective sensors and durable balloons. The rapid advancements in AI weather forecasting over the past four years have enabled the company to generate its own predictions, a capability previously restricted to entities with access to expensive supercomputing infrastructure. Currently, WindBorne operates approximately 600 balloons from 20 global launch sites, gathering data from challenging environments, such as the eye of a typhoon. They are also deploying aerial sensor packages designed to function as floating buoys after landing in the ocean, further expanding their data collection capabilities. This extensive network forms a 'planetary nervous system,' creating a proprietary data set that enhances their weather model, which also integrates data from global government weather agencies. WindBorne's CEO, John Dean, emphasized that their balloons contribute to more accurate forecasts, offering a stronger value per data point compared to satellite data, a factor that significantly mitigated investment risk during their funding discussions.

While WindBorne's primary clientele currently includes government bodies, such as the U.S. National Weather Service and the U.S. Air Force and Navy through research partnerships, the company is poised for commercial expansion. These partnerships involve developing forecasting models that can operate on ships with limited connectivity. The new funding round will enable WindBorne to invest in computing resources, transition its balloon network's satellite communications to a mesh radio network, and build out its go-to-market team to attract private sector clients. Although past attempts by startups to scale sensing businesses in the private sector have faced challenges in data monetization, the integration of AI is expected to streamline this process. Saloni Multani, a partner at Galvanize and co-leader of the funding round, highlighted that AI can make integrating weather forecasts into business decision-making more efficient and valuable, transforming the private weather market.
