Revolutionizing Live Commerce: The Power of Real-Time AI Recommendations
The Strategic Integration of Shaped's AI Technology
Whatnot announced its acquisition of Shaped, an AI firm specializing in real-time recommendations and search. This collaboration is set to enhance Whatnot's platform by integrating advanced machine learning capabilities, allowing for more precise and dynamic product discovery for its growing user base. The initiative reflects Whatnot's commitment to leveraging artificial intelligence to overcome key obstacles in live commerce.
Addressing the Dynamic Nature of Live Shopping
Unlike conventional online retail, Whatnot's marketplace is characterized by its rapidly changing inventory and live auctions, which can conclude in mere minutes or extend over several hours. This dynamic environment presents a unique challenge for providing relevant product recommendations. The integration of Shaped's technology is specifically designed to tackle this complexity, ensuring that shoppers receive highly personalized suggestions in real time, adapting to the fluid nature of live sales.
Accelerating Recommendation Engine Speed and Accuracy
Emmanuel Fuentes, Whatnot's VP of Data and AI, highlighted that the acquisition would enable the company to deliver recommendations with unprecedented speed and personalization. He noted that Whatnot has already reduced recommendation latency from a day to just minutes over the past six years. Shaped's expertise is expected to further accelerate these capabilities, bringing recommendations even closer to instantaneous delivery. Whatnot's systems currently process over 500,000 hours of live video and millions of interactions weekly, using this data to continuously refine its recommendation algorithms.
Shaped's Expertise and Future Leadership
Shaped was founded with the mission of assisting businesses in developing AI-driven recommendation systems. Its proprietary technology synergizes existing customer data with large language models and machine learning to craft highly tailored search and discovery experiences. Shaped's client portfolio included notable companies such as Outdoorsy and QVC. Following the acquisition, Shaped's founder and CEO, Tullie Murrell, along with a team of engineers and AI researchers, will join Whatnot. Murrell will spearhead Whatnot's newly established Applied AI Research group, bringing his extensive experience from his tenure at Meta.
Whatnot's Remarkable Growth and Market Expansion
This acquisition coincides with a period of substantial growth for Whatnot, which was launched in 2019. The company recently celebrated a significant milestone, announcing that its sellers have collectively surpassed one billion orders. Earlier this year, Whatnot successfully secured $225 million in Series F funding, elevating its valuation to over $11 billion, driven by the addition of 20 million new buyers in the past year. Whatnot has also considerably broadened its marketplace, introducing over 35 new categories last year, including art, golf, and vinyl, and an additional 45 categories in the first half of 2025, with new subcategories continuously being rolled out.
The Competitive Landscape of AI in Resale
The move by Whatnot is part of a larger trend within the resale industry, where major players are actively integrating AI into their platforms. Companies like eBay and Poshmark are also investing in AI technologies to enhance their personalization and discovery features, underscoring the growing importance of artificial intelligence in shaping the future of e-commerce and live shopping.
