Samsung's Certified Re-Newed initiative has recently expanded its availability to Amazon, presenting a selection of fourteen revitalized Galaxy smartphones spanning two generations. These offerings range in price from $489 for the Galaxy S24 FE (128GB) to $1,029 for the Galaxy S25 Ultra (512GB), providing Amazon customers with numerous options from prior flagship models. These are not merely standard refurbished devices; Samsung subjects them to a rigorous 147-point quality inspection to guarantee they perform as if new before earning the "Certified Re-Newed" designation. Beyond just battery replacements, Samsung includes a one-year warranty and a new IMEI number, effectively making them a more economical alternative to brand-new flagships while being more dependable than typical used phones.
When considering a refurbished flagship, the goal isn't necessarily to acquire the newest or cheapest model. Each of the fourteen Galaxy phones currently listed on Amazon has its own unique advantages and disadvantages. After careful evaluation, one particular model emerges as the optimal choice, striking an excellent balance between cost, capabilities, and ongoing software updates.
Among the range of 14 Certified Re-Newed models available, the $549 Galaxy S24 (256GB) is the sole device I would strongly recommend. Launched in January 2024 as the foundational model of Samsung's premium series, the 256GB variant originally retailed for $859. This refurbished option therefore represents a $310 saving for an identical set of specifications and features. Our initial assessment of the Galaxy S24 highlighted its robust battery life, impressive overall performance, and superior build quality.
The Galaxy S24 is positioned between several other enticing options within this collection. One such alternative is the Galaxy S24 FE, offering the most affordable 256GB storage at $519. However, for an additional $30, the Galaxy S24 (256GB) delivers significantly superior performance with its Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, outperforming the Galaxy S24 FE's Exynos 2400e. Furthermore, the Galaxy S24 boasts advanced LTPO display technology, wireless Samsung DeX, and an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. The Galaxy S24 FE does feature a larger display (6.7 inches compared to 6.2 inches) and a more substantial battery (4,700mAh versus 4,000mAh), which might be more appealing to some users.
Conversely, the Galaxy S24 is more competitively priced than the $629 Galaxy S25 (256GB). Although the Galaxy S25 features a newer Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset and a more refined physical design, the additional $80 cost is difficult to justify when comparing two refurbished flagships. While the Galaxy S25 offers an extra year of software support, almost every other aspect, from display technology and camera configuration to battery capacity and charging speed, remains largely identical to the Galaxy S24. The performance enhancements are considered too minimal to warrant the increased expenditure.
Regarding storage capacity, while the $519 Galaxy S24 (128GB) represents a more budget-friendly option than its 256GB counterpart, investing the additional funds for the larger storage is highly advisable. For just an extra $30, you effectively double the storage. Given the high cost of acquiring supplementary storage, whether through physical hardware or cloud services, this additional 128GB becomes an invaluable asset at such a nominal price difference.
Another crucial consideration is the Galaxy S24's extensive seven-year software support. With 256GB of storage, the Galaxy S24 is well-equipped to last until its Android updates conclude in 2031. Although 128GB might seem sufficient for immediate needs, applications are continuously growing in size. Without adequate storage, users might find it challenging to retain hundreds or even thousands of media files without having to delete content in the coming years. Furthermore, the 128GB variant of the Galaxy S24 utilizes the slower UFS 3.1 storage standard, whereas the 256GB model employs the newer UFS 4.0, which offers roughly double the data transfer speed. While the initial performance difference might appear negligible, the speed improvement becomes noticeable when transferring large media files or installing substantial applications. UFS 4.0 is also more energy-efficient, contributing to prolonged battery life.
Samsung's Certified Re-Newed program provides exceptional value. Phones acquired through this program come with a one-year warranty, genuine part replacements, and a new IMEI, alongside a fresh battery. In contrast, standard refurbished phones from third-party vendors typically only include a battery replacement and minor cosmetic repairs. Samsung's refurbished devices are also delivered in new packaging, complete with a charging cable, SIM ejector tool, and user manual. Moreover, these Galaxy phones are sold unlocked and are eligible for Samsung Care+.
Beyond offering significant savings compared to brand-new flagships, Samsung's Certified Re-Newed phones also outperform many contemporary mid-range devices. For instance, the Google Pixel 10a (256GB) retails for $699, and the Galaxy A57 (256GB) is priced slightly lower at $679. Samsung's refurbished Galaxy S24, available for just $549 on Amazon, boasts superior raw performance than either of these mid-range phones. Additionally, the Galaxy S24 features a telephoto camera and premium build quality that the Pixel 10a and Galaxy A57 cannot match. As flagship smartphone prices continue to rise annually and second-hand phones often lack dependable quality assurance, investing in a refurbished device has become a more sensible decision than ever before. Samsung's Certified Re-Newed program, while not a novel concept, warrants stronger consideration today, especially given the ease of purchase through Amazon.
