It has become evident that RPA, with its historical roots tracing back to the 1990s and its strong connection to workflow automation, provides a robust framework for developing agentic automation solutions. These solutions transcend the scope of the relatively straightforward operational tasks that businesses traditionally assigned to RPA, such as processing claims, managing payables, or handling patient registrations. UiPath's Vision for Autonomous Digital Workers
Mark Greene, senior vice president and general manager of AI at UiPath, highlighted that traditional RPA is centered on automating predictable, repetitive tasks. He explained that this involves deploying autonomous digital workers, or robots, which can interact with user interfaces as effectively as humans, thereby accelerating diverse business processes. Greene emphasized that this established understanding of managing autonomous digital workers, which operate either independently or with human oversight, is precisely what is needed for deploying agentic systems. He stressed the importance of applying robust governance, compliance, and control mechanisms, or 'guardrails,' to these new agents.
Bridging the Gap: How Agentic AI Addresses RPA Limitations
Greene further elaborated that UiPath has seamlessly integrated these new agentic capabilities into the identical platform used to construct their digital workforce. In the past, conventional RPA robots, despite efficiently matching countless invoices daily, struggled with irregularities such as mismatched, duplicate, or erroneous invoices. The resolution of these exceptions typically fell to human operators. However, Greene revealed that agents can now be deployed to manage these exceptions, showcasing a significant advancement in automated problem-solving.
