The Creative Team Behind the Horror
This adaptation is a product of Blue Ice, with Jem Garrard taking on the roles of writer and executive producer, and Trevor Calverley directing. The executive producer team also includes Lance Samuels, Joan Waricha, Jane Stine, and Garrard, alongside producers Dan Bernard, Yvonne Bernard, Tebogo Maila, Darren Cameron, and Adam Friedlander. This collective effort aims to bring Stine's chilling narrative to the screen with a fresh vision.
Tubi's Commitment to Stine's Legacy
Adam Lewinson, Chief Content Officer at Tubi, expressed his enthusiasm for continuing the partnership with R.L. Stine, highlighting Stine's unique talent for crafting scary, fun, and endlessly engaging stories that resonate with Tubi's audience. Lewinson emphasized that 'The Babysitter,' as one of Stine's most iconic novels, will deliver an exciting new thriller for both loyal fans and a new generation of viewers.
A Milestone Adaptation: Beyond the Anthologies
This movie marks a significant step in Tubi's collaboration with R.L. Stine, being the fourth film in their partnership. Notably, it's the first adaptation that isn't based on a short story from Stine's 'Nightmare Hour' or 'Haunting Hour' anthologies. This signals a deeper dive into Stine's extensive bibliography, promising fans a more expansive narrative experience.
The Enduring Appeal of 'The Babysitter' Series
First published in 1989, 'The Babysitter' and its three sequels ('The Babysitter II' in 1991, 'The Babysitter III' in 1993, and 'The Babysitter IV' in 1995) played a crucial role in establishing R.L. Stine as a leading author in children's horror. The original story introduced Jenny, a teenager tormented by threatening calls and notes, eventually uncovering that the danger originated from within the very house she was protecting. The subsequent books explore Jenny's psychological recovery and her future encounters with terror, while the third installment shifts focus to her cousin Debra, who experiences similar harrowing events.
Expanding the Stine Universe: 'Afraid of Clowns'
Tubi also recently announced another Stine adaptation, 'Afraid of Clowns,' based on 'The Nightmare Hour' short. This film, also slated for a 2027 release, is written and directed by Garrard and features Frankie Honey, Ava Ferrer, Azriel Dalman, Joe Moore, and 'RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars' winner Jimbo. The movie is set within the Redhaven saga, where a mysterious clown troupe led by Ringmaster Rollo raises Frankie's suspicions regarding a child's disappearance. Frankie endeavors to protect her brother by convincing her friends to confront the clowns before another tragedy occurs.
