TSR Lowers Atlantic Hurricane Season Forecast Amid Unfavorable Conditions

Tropical Storm Risk (TSR) has recently adjusted its projections for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, indicating a decrease in anticipated activity. This revision stems from observations that conditions in the sub-tropical Atlantic are proving less conducive to storm formation than previously expected. The updated forecast suggests a season with fewer named storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes, alongside a lower Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) index. This marks a significant shift from earlier forecasts, underscoring the dynamic nature of weather prediction and the influence of evolving atmospheric and oceanic factors on seasonal outlooks.

TSR's journey through the 2026 hurricane season predictions has been one of continuous recalibration. Initially, in its April forecast, TSR had already reduced its long-range outlook to 12 named tropical storms, 5 hurricanes, and only 1 major hurricane, with an ACE of 66. Following this, the May update saw further reductions, with predictions dropping to 11 named storms, 4 hurricanes, and 1 major hurricane, and the ACE falling to 55. However, an unexpected slight increase was noted in early July, with the forecast returning to 11 named tropical storms, 5 hurricanes, and 2 major hurricanes, bringing the ACE back up to 67. This fluctuation highlights the complexity and uncertainty inherent in long-range weather forecasting.

As the hurricane season progresses towards its traditional peak, TSR's latest assessment, issued in August, indicates that tropical conditions are once again less favorable for storm development. The current forecast now anticipates a total of 10 named tropical storms, 4 hurricanes, and just 1 major hurricane for the season, with the ACE Index further reduced to 55. These figures include the two named storms, Arthur and Beryl, that have already occurred. This revised outlook positions the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season well below the 1991-2020 30-year average, which typically sees 14 named tropical storms, 7 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes, with an ACE of 122.

According to TSR's experts, the August-September sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic Main Development Region are expected to be slightly warmer than average, while the July-September trade wind anomaly is predicted to be stronger than normal due to a persistent strong El Niño throughout the summer and autumn of 2026. Despite these factors, the overall conditions in the sub-tropical Atlantic have deteriorated from early July expectations, leading to the downward revision. TSR now estimates a 0% probability of the season falling into the upper tercile for ACE, a 26% likelihood for the middle tercile, and a 74% chance of being in the lower tercile, with an ACE below 75.

Furthermore, TSR's updated forecast includes a prediction of 3 US landfalling named tropical storms and 1 landfalling US hurricane for the 2026 season, which also falls below both long-term and short-term averages. While there remains some potential for tropical cyclone development within the Atlantic sub-tropics, TSR does not expect this to offset the very unfavorable conditions anticipated across the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean Sea. This final seasonal forecast from TSR aligns with similar adjustments from other meteorological bodies, such as Colorado State University, which maintained its forecast of a well-below-normal hurricane season. These forecasts, while directionally useful, serve as a crucial reminder that even a single significant storm making landfall in an economically sensitive region can have substantial implications for the insurance, reinsurance, catastrophe bond, and insurance-linked securities markets.
