However, a deeper look at the available data suggests that the program is making substantial and encouraging progress, albeit not in the manner many investors might have anticipated.

Many investors in Tesla have historically concentrated on metrics such as the expanding size of the robotaxi fleet and the number of cities where the service is operational. This emphasis was largely fueled by prior statements from CEO Elon Musk, which had set certain expectations for a rapid and widespread launch. Furthermore, information regarding fleet growth and geographical expansion is often easily accessible through public channels and social media, making these aspects straightforward to track.

Nevertheless, a shift in communication from management indicates that the current focus is squarely on advancing the robotaxi's underlying software, specifically the next iteration, v15, and accumulating extensive operational miles. This approach prioritizes rigorous testing and refinement over a hasty broad deployment. Encouragingly, Tesla has already integrated early versions of v15 into its existing robotaxi fleet, signifying tangible development. Despite this progress, a full-scale commercial launch is not expected until late 2026 or early 2027, as the company dedicates efforts to perfecting v15.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) mandates that manufacturers report all incidents involving automated driving systems (ADS), which includes Tesla's robotaxi occurrences. An analysis of these reported incidents since the program's inception last year reveals a generally positive trend. For instance, a detailed examination of 14 incidents in 2026 shows that the majority were not due to the robotaxi's autonomous system but rather external factors, such as being struck by another vehicle. Only a small fraction involved the autonomous system, and some were minor events caused by remote human operators. For instance, specific incidents included low-speed contact with a wooden pole while reversing, a tire touching a curb during parking, and a side mirror brushing a tow truck on a narrow street, all occurring at very low speeds. Another noted incident involved the ADS making contact with a thin metal chain blocking a parking lot entrance. While these minor occurrences highlight ongoing refinement, they collectively demonstrate a robust safety profile.

These detailed safety statistics, which indicate a low rate of at-fault incidents, provide a strong foundation for patient investors. While acknowledging that the system, specifically v15, is still undergoing refinement and that minor impacts, even at low speeds, are undesirable, the data strongly supports the notion of continuous improvement and dedication to safety. The number of remote-assistance interventions remains an area that requires more transparency, but the overall picture is one of steady advancement. This data offers a compelling argument for those invested in Tesla's long-term vision for autonomous transportation, suggesting that the robotaxi rollout is progressing responsibly toward eventual large-scale deployment.
