Starcloud, a burgeoning enterprise focused on deploying satellites capable of performing artificial intelligence computations in Earth's orbit, recently announced a significant financial boost. The company has secured an additional $250 million to its Series A funding round, initially valued at $170 million in March, bringing its total valuation to $2.3 billion.
This substantial capital infusion is earmarked for several critical initiatives: establishing an expanded manufacturing facility and accelerating the development of its flagship orbital data center, Starcloud-3. This advanced spacecraft is designed to be launched aboard SpaceX's forthcoming Starship rocket. A key strategic motivation behind this fundraising drive is to proactively secure launch opportunities, as the availability of commercial space transportation is rapidly becoming a bottleneck in the industry. Philip Johnston, the CEO, highlighted the intensifying competition for rocket payload space, noting the scheduled conclusion of SpaceX's Falcon 9 program in 2028, which is increasing pressure on satellite operators to secure slots on the newer, more powerful Starship or alternative launch vehicles.
Starcloud's immediate plans include deploying two of its new generation 8 kW compute satellites, designated Starcloud-2, via rideshare missions in 2027. These satellites are designed to conduct orbital inference tasks for various clients, including U.S. government entities. The company is actively exploring options for dedicated Falcon 9 launches and partnerships with other providers to support its future missions. The long-term vision for Starcloud is deeply intertwined with the potential of SpaceX's Starship to dramatically reduce launch costs, thereby enabling the establishment of an orbital inference layer that can rival terrestrial data centers. Johnston maintains strong confidence in SpaceX's capability to achieve rapid and frequent reusability of its most powerful rocket. Despite a recent announcement by Elon Musk regarding a delay in Starship's catch attempt and its first re-flight, Starcloud remains optimistic about securing future launch capacity for its ambitious projects.
The extended funding round saw leadership from Manhattan West Ventures, with notable participation from industry giants Nvidia and Cisco. An insider confirmed Nvidia's contribution of $25 million, underscoring its belief in Starcloud's technological edge. Other investors included Benchmark, EQT, Soma, NFX, 776, Cedar Capital, Goanna Capital, and Standard Capital. Johnston emphasized that Nvidia's investment signals a strong validation of Starcloud's pioneering work in the nascent field of space computing. Starcloud is currently the only known entity operating a terrestrial Nvidia H100 data center GPU in orbit and has successfully trained a model using this technology, sharing valuable insights with Nvidia as it develops its specialized Vera Rubin Space-1 chip. The company, which is rapidly expanding its team, is also setting up production lines in a 100,000-square-foot facility in Woodinville, Washington, positioning itself at the forefront of orbital data processing innovation.
