When Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SPCX) became publicly traded on June 12, marking the largest initial public offering in history, demand for its shares was so high that the stock closed at over $160, significantly exceeding its initial price of $135. Cathie Wood, a prominent technology investor and long-term supporter of Tesla, was among the major purchasers. Her firm, Ark Invest, acquired SpaceX shares across four of its exchange-traded funds on the IPO day and has continued to buy more since. Wood has even stated that SpaceX “could become the most important company in history,” a strong endorsement from an investor known for her bold forecasts. However, despite its historical potential, the company's stock may not represent a sound investment due to the high price investors are currently willing to pay for a future that is still uncertain.
The positive case for SpaceX is clear: Starlink is already a remarkably successful venture, with its connectivity revenue reaching $4.3 billion in the second quarter, operating margins climbing to 38.6%, and subscriber numbers doubling year-over-year. Starlink's impressive performance is a significant factor preventing a quick dismissal of SpaceX's valuation. Furthermore, the company's launch division holds a dominant position, responsible for sending over 80% of the world's payload into orbit. Its next-generation rocket, Starship, could further enhance this advantage; a single Starship launch is designed to carry 20 times the Starlink capacity of a Falcon 9, potentially reducing the cost of expanding connectivity.
However, the significant challenge lies in the company's cash flow. SpaceX reported a negative free cash flow of $25 billion in the first half of 2026 alone. This substantial outflow is primarily directed towards its AI division, raising doubts about the long-term return on this investment. While this spending has fueled rapid sales growth—with AI revenue surging from $818 million to $2.6 billion in a single quarter after providing compute services to Anthropic—the AI segment also incurred nearly $16 billion in capital expenditure during the same period. Typically, capital expenditures are investments expected to generate future returns, but in the case of AI, these costs might behave more like continuous operational expenses, rarely diminishing over time. Considering that almost 90% of the company's investments are channeled into this AI sector, the trajectory of SpaceX is inextricably linked to the success of SpaceXAI.
Given these factors, SpaceX stock does not appear to be a compelling buy. Even an innovative rocket program and a potentially revolutionary satellite business are not sufficient to offset the cash-intensive AI division, especially when the company's valuation is projected to exceed $1.8 trillion. The investment decisions of prominent figures like Cathie Wood, while notable, should not solely influence individual investment choices. Wood has certainly made insightful predictions in the past, but blindly following her strategy has also led to challenging outcomes, as evidenced by her flagship Ark Innovation ETF, which has seen a decline of over 25% in the last five years, contrasting sharply with the S&P 500's nearly 73% gain during the same period. Therefore, a thorough and independent assessment of the company's financial health and strategic investments is essential before committing to such a high valuation.
