South Korea is taking a proactive stance in technological leadership by formally identifying key areas for enhanced national support. The Ministry of Science and ICT, in collaboration with the Korea Institute of Science & Technology Evaluation and Planning, has announced that quantum random number generation and AI chip design for self-driving cars will now receive strategic designation. This move underlines the nation's commitment to bolstering its capabilities in sectors vital for both national security and economic growth.

This strategic classification provides significant advantages to the companies involved, specifically EYL and Boss Semiconductor. EYL's quantum random number generator technology, essential for secure communication across sensitive domains like defense and finance, has been recognized for its role in advancing quantum cryptography. Concurrently, Boss Semiconductor's expertise in developing high-performance, low-power AI semiconductors for advanced autonomous vehicles positions South Korea at the forefront of future mobility solutions. This designation is critical, as these are among the first such technologies to be verified under the Special Act on Fostering National Strategic Technologies, granting them access to crucial policy financing and support. This selective process, which saw only two out of seventeen applications approved in the latest round, highlights the rigorous standards applied.

By investing heavily in these cutting-edge technologies, South Korea aims to secure its position as a global leader in AI and quantum computing. This strategic vision supports the development of innovative solutions that will drive both economic prosperity and national resilience. The emphasis on these advanced fields reflects a broader commitment to technological sovereignty and future-proofing the nation's infrastructure against evolving global challenges, paving the way for continued advancements and international collaboration in these critical domains.
