Seamless Sonic Command: Sonos Meets iPhone's Lock Screen
A Highly Anticipated Feature Arrives for iOS Users
Sonos has unveiled a significant update for its mobile application, bringing much-requested support for iOS Live Activities. This integration allows iPhone owners to directly control their Sonos systems' playback from the lock screen, eliminating the need to fully unlock their device and open the app. This feature was widely sought after by users seeking more immediate access to their audio controls.
Enhanced Lock Screen Playback Management
The new Sonos Live Activity provides core details and controls for music and podcasts being played through a Sonos system. While certain features, such as displaying album art, are not yet available, users can now manage their audio experience more efficiently without delving into the application itself.
Addressing User Feedback and Initial Setup
The introduction of Live Activities follows previous user feedback and a major app redesign in 2024 that faced some criticism. Sonos CEO Tom Conrad had previously hinted at the development of lock screen controls, similar to those already present in the Android version of the app. To ensure user preference, the Live Activity feature is initially disabled by default but can be activated through the Sonos app's settings and the iOS system settings.
Dynamic Display and Automatic Disappearance
Once enabled, the Live Activity will automatically appear on the lock screen shortly after audio playback begins and the app is closed. It clearly displays the name of the Sonos group or room currently playing audio, along with the title of the track or podcast. To maintain a clean and uncluttered lock screen, the Live Activity will automatically vanish 15 minutes after playback ceases.
Future Expansions and Ongoing Development
While the initial rollout includes support for Apple Watch and CarPlay, the direct controls within these platforms are not yet functional. Despite this, Sonos has indicated that its development team is actively working on refining the new feature and exploring innovative ways to further enrich the lock screen experience, including potential solutions for displaying album art.
