SoftBank's Bold Leap into Physical AI with Major Robotics Acquisition
SoftBank's Strategic Investment in Robotics
SoftBank Group, a leading Japanese investment firm, announced its acquisition of ABB Group's robotics unit, based in Zurich, Switzerland, for an impressive $5.375 billion. This acquisition highlights SoftBank's increasing focus on the robotics sector, which it views as crucial for the development of what it terms 'physical AI'. The transaction is currently awaiting regulatory approval and is anticipated to conclude by mid to late 2026. Following the completion of the acquisition, Sami Atiya, the current head of ABB's robotics division, will depart from his position.
Overview of ABB's Robotics Division
ABB's robotics division is a substantial operation, employing approximately 7,000 individuals. The unit specializes in manufacturing a diverse range of robots and associated equipment, designed for various applications such as precise picking, thorough cleaning, and efficient painting tasks. In 2024, this division generated $2.3 billion in revenue, contributing 7% to ABB's total revenue. Earlier in the year, in April, ABB had publicly disclosed its intentions to spin off its robotics business into a distinct, publicly listed entity.
SoftBank's Ambition for Growth and Innovation
SoftBank has expressed its intention to revitalize and boost the sales performance of ABB's robotics spin-off. The robotics unit's revenue in 2024 was $2.3 billion, a decrease from $2.5 billion reported in the preceding year. This acquisition is expected to inject new momentum and strategic direction into the business under SoftBank's leadership.
Expanding SoftBank's Robotics Portfolio
Over recent years, SoftBank has been actively expanding its investments and holdings within the robotics industry. Its portfolio includes stakes in established companies like AutoStore, as well as emerging startups such as Skild AI and Agile Robots. Furthermore, SoftBank established its own dedicated robotics platform, SoftBank Robotics Group, in 2014, underscoring its long-term commitment to the field.
Vision for Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI)
Masayoshi Son, Chairman and CEO of SoftBank, articulated the company's ambitious vision, stating that "SoftBank's next frontier is physical AI." He emphasized that the collaboration with ABB Robotics will combine world-class technology and talent to realize a shared goal of merging Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) with robotics. This integration is expected to drive groundbreaking advancements that will significantly benefit humanity.
Core Focus Areas for SoftBank's Future
Robotics stands as one of SoftBank's four primary strategic focus areas. The other key domains include AI chips, AI data centers, and energy. SoftBank believes that the "Information Revolution" is transitioning from personal computers and the internet to smartphones, and is now entering a transformative phase led by artificial intelligence. Within this context, SoftBank Group has explicitly stated its mission to achieve artificial super intelligence for the betterment of humankind.
