Despite Samsung's assurances of rapid power replenishment, numerous early adopters have taken to online platforms to voice their frustration over charging durations that extend well beyond the stated specifications, compelling some to employ unconventional cooling solutions.
Samsung officially advertises an 80-minute full charge for the 40mm Watch 9 and 90 minutes for larger models like the 44mm Watch 9 and Watch Ultra 2. However, user experiences diverge sharply from these claims. Reports detail charging cycles lasting over two hours for the 40mm Watch 9, and an alarming four hours for the Watch Ultra 2, even under typical ambient conditions. This discrepancy is largely attributed to aggressive thermal throttling, where the devices reduce charging power from 5.5W to 3.5W or less as internal temperatures rise, severely impeding the charging process. The situation has become so pronounced that some users are resorting to drastic measures, such as directing desk fans at their watches or even placing them on ice with thermal paste, in an attempt to maintain optimal charging speeds.
Further complicating matters, there are indications of backward compatibility issues with previous generation Galaxy Watch 8 chargers and third-party charging docks. Users have reported frequent "slow charging" notifications or complete rejection of power sources. Curiously, some individuals have found that older Watch 6 charging pucks deliver faster results than the new fast-charging cables, suggesting a potential firmware handshake problem rather than a hardware limitation.
