Selective Insurance Company is actively engaging in the catastrophe bond market once more, launching its second significant issuance. This new endeavor aims to secure a substantial $300 million, potentially more, in multi-peril collateralized reinsurance. The High Point Re Ltd. (Series 2027-1) transaction is designed to both renew and significantly broaden the scope of coverage previously established by its inaugural bond, which is nearing its maturity. This strategic move underscores Selective Insurance’s commitment to fortifying its reinsurance framework through capital markets.

Detailed Report: Selective Insurance’s High Point Re 2027-1 Catastrophe Bond

On November 5th, 2026, Selective Insurance Company, a prominent U.S. property and casualty insurer, initiated its second catastrophe bond offering. This new issuance, named High Point Re Ltd. (Series 2027-1), seeks to procure at least $300 million in collateralized reinsurance. This follows their successful debut in 2023 with the High Point Re Ltd. (Series 2023-1) issuance, which provided $300 million in protection and is set to mature by the close of the current year.

A notable enhancement in the High Point Re 2027-1 bond is its expanded geographical coverage. While the 2023 bond excluded California, Florida, Louisiana, and Texas, the new 2027-1 series will encompass all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. This broader reach signifies Selective Insurance’s intent to secure comprehensive reinsurance across all regions where it faces potential exposures. The Bermuda-based special purpose insurer, High Point Re Ltd., is targeting a single tranche of $300 million Series 2027-1 Class A notes. These notes will be offered to investors, with the proceeds collateralizing a multi-year, multi-peril reinsurance agreement for Selective Insurance and its subsidiaries.

The four-year reinsurance protection, extending until the end of 2030, will cover losses from a spectrum of U.S. perils. These include named storms, earthquakes, severe thunderstorms, winter storms, wildfires, meteorite impacts, and volcanic eruptions. The protection mechanism is based on an indemnity trigger and operates on a per-occurrence basis. The Class A notes are structured to attach at an $800 million loss threshold, covering a share of losses up to $1.5 billion for Selective. Initial projections indicate an attachment probability of 0.93% and a base expected loss of 0.6%. Investors are being offered a price spread guidance ranging from 2.75% to 3.25%, which reflects a notable shift compared to the 2023 bond’s initial expected loss of 0.77% and a spread of 5.75%. This reduction in pricing indicates softer reinsurance market conditions.

The return of Selective Insurance to the catastrophe bond market for renewal is a positive indicator for the sector. The structure of this deal, participating in a broad layer of its reinsurance tower, suggests potential for an upsizing of the issuance depending on market interest and the company’s strategic needs.

This latest catastrophe bond issuance by Selective Insurance highlights a growing trend among insurers to leverage capital markets for robust and flexible reinsurance solutions. The expansion of coverage to all U.S. states reflects a strategic adaptation to evolving risk landscapes and a desire for comprehensive financial protection. Furthermore, the more favorable pricing observed in this renewal cycle suggests a dynamic reinsurance market where conditions can rapidly shift, offering both opportunities and challenges for market participants. For investors, these bonds continue to offer an attractive risk-adjusted return profile, especially as the market adjusts to new pricing benchmarks.
