Samsung has consistently led the foldable phone market, and its eighth generation of devices demonstrates continued refinement. A notable improvement across the new foldable line is the introduction of "flex titanium" material, which significantly reduces the display crease—a long-standing challenge in foldable technology. This new material, combining a titanium-alloy film with a titanium plate, enhances flexibility and minimizes the crease's visibility. This innovation sets the stage for a compelling rivalry with upcoming foldable devices from other major tech players, such as the rumored foldable iPhone expected later this year.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8, Samsung's flagship foldable, introduces a sleek, passport-sized design that is remarkably thin and light. When closed, it measures only 9.7mm thick, reducing to 4.5mm when unfolded, and weighs a mere 201 grams, making it the lightest Z Fold model to date. The cover screen features a 10:16 aspect ratio, optimized for quick interactions like messaging and social media, while the main unfolded display boasts a 4:3 ratio for immersive experiences such as video playback and gaming. Its camera system includes a dual 50MP wide-angle rear camera, a 10MP main camera, and a 10MP selfie camera. Powering the device is a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chipset, complemented by a larger 4,800mAh battery, an upgrade from the previous 4,400mAh. The enhanced Flex Titanium technology substantially minimizes the crease, making the device more comfortable to hold and allowing it to lie completely flat when opened, which is a major usability improvement.
The high-end Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra stands out as a strong competitor in the premium foldable segment. Slightly larger than the standard Z Fold 8, it features an 8-inch inner screen and a 6.5-inch cover screen, both with a 120Hz refresh rate, while maintaining a total weight of 215 grams. A significant advancement is its battery, upgraded to 5,000mAh, finally addressing long-standing capacity concerns in the Z Fold series. It also supports faster 45W wired charging, enabling a 0 to 67% charge in just 30 minutes. The Ultra model boasts the best cameras, including a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP ultrawide lens, and a 10MP 3x telephoto camera, with support for 8K video recording. The wider form factor and a display with 3,000 nits of brightness and an anti-reflective coating further enhance the viewing experience.
The Galaxy Z Flip 8, Samsung's flip-style foldable, is designed for portability and affordability. It features a 6.9-inch dynamic AMOLED inner display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a redesigned "FlexWindow" for expanded functionality on the cover screen. The 50MP camera offers unique features like hands-free shooting and auto stabilization, along with a "mirror view" for quick checks. Although slightly thicker than its predecessor, it is lighter at 180 grams and includes a 4,300mAh battery with 45W fast charging. It is powered by an Exynos 2600 processor with 12GB of RAM, available in 256GB and 512GB storage options.
The event also showcased two new smartwatches: the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 and the Galaxy Watch 9. The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, designed for high-performance athletes, offers a 5,000-nit display, an 800mAh battery, and an IP69K durability rating. Despite its large battery, it is 12% slimmer than the previous model. The Galaxy Watch 9, an everyday smartwatch, features 3,000 nits of brightness, a lightweight aluminum casing, and an upgraded 390mAh battery providing 30 hours of life with Always-On Display. Both smartwatches integrate new AI-powered health tracking features, including vitals monitoring, sleep apnea detection, and a Heart Health score with blood pressure monitoring, aligning with competitors like Oura, Google, and Apple in health technology.
