The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) issued an addendum to its Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air, effective March 27, 2026. These regulations simplify and clarify power bank usage on aircraft:

  • A maximum of two power banks per passenger.
  • A capacity limit of 100 watt-hours (Wh) per power bank. While some airlines, like easyJet, may allow batteries up to 160Wh with operator approval, a universal prohibition on power banks over 100Wh is set to take effect on January 1, 2027, under new International Air Transport Association (IATA) rules. For context, 100Wh is roughly equivalent to 27,000 mAh.
  • Strict prohibition against in-flight charging of devices or recharging power banks.
  • Power banks are not permitted in overhead storage bins.

These rules unequivocally classify power banks as a potential in-flight risk, even leading Chinese airlines to ban uncertified power banks or those with illegible labels.

Furthermore, the FAA explicitly prohibits damaged or recalled batteries and battery-powered devices on aircraft, a critical detail often overlooked by consumers.

  • Choose appropriate capacities. A 10,000mAh (37Wh) power bank is sufficient for most daily needs, and a 5,000mAh (18.5Wh) unit often suffices for minimal use. For those requiring larger capacities, reputable brands offer safer, high-capacity options.
  • Always keep power banks visible during charging or use. Avoid placing them in pockets, bags, or under materials like paper or clothing that can trap heat and fuel a fire.
  • Disconnect all cables from the power bank when not in use. This prevents potential short circuits or unexplained melting incidents, as observed with USB-C cables.

While the confined environment of an aircraft amplifies the danger of lithium fires, the risks associated with power bank misuse extend beyond air travel.
