Over the last ten years, the Philadelphia 76ers franchise has been plagued by a series of debilitating player injuries, consistently impeding their progress towards the NBA Finals and even preventing deeper advancements in the postseason. This persistent issue has cast a shadow over the team's ambitions, despite periods of strong performance, such as Joel Embiid's MVP season in 2022-2023, where the team secured a top seed in the Eastern Conference with 54 wins. However, their playoff campaigns frequently concluded in the semifinals, largely attributable to the recurring health problems of their star players.
The team’s struggles with injuries have been a defining characteristic of their recent history. Joel Embiid, a central figure for the 76ers, has endured multiple significant setbacks. His career began with two full seasons missed due to a stress fracture in his right navicular bone and subsequent foot surgery, followed by a recurrence of the issue. Later, in 2018, he suffered an orbital fracture and a concussion after a collision. A left-hand ligament injury in January 2020 necessitated surgery. Most recently, in the past season, Embiid experienced renewed knee issues, undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and being limited to just 19 games before being sidelined for the remainder of the season.
New acquisitions have not been immune to this unfortunate trend. Paul George, in his inaugural year with the Sixers, has already contended with a knee bone bruise, problems with his left adductor muscle, and a torn pinky tendon. He also suffered hyperextensions of his left knee both in the preseason and again in November 2024, with arthroscopic surgery performed in July 2025 to address the damage. Similarly, Tyrese Maxey was ruled out for a significant part of last season due to a finger tendon injury and dealt with right hamstring soreness in November 2024. Even promising rookie Jared McCain, after a strong start to his career, faced a season-ending knee injury that limited him to 23 games. Following rehabilitation and joining the 2025 training camp, he tore a UCL in his right thumb during a workout.
While these injury occurrences are often unforeseen, they highlight a critical challenge for the 76ers. To genuinely contend for a championship, especially with their star players reaching their prime, the organization must find more effective strategies to mitigate and prevent these persistent health issues, ensuring their roster can consistently perform at its full potential.
