OpenAI is rolling out substantial upgrades to its popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, making unlimited text conversations accessible to all free users. These enhancements also include improved models and new functionalities for both free and paid subscribers, marking a significant step in the platform's evolution.

ChatGPT's Latest Evolution: Intelligence for Everyone, Flexibility for Pros

Expanded Access for All: Unlimited Text Chats with GPT-5.6 Luna

OpenAI has eliminated restrictions on text-based interactions for all ChatGPT users, regardless of their subscription status. This move coincides with the platform's achievement of one billion weekly users. The underlying technology for this expanded free experience will be the new GPT-5.6 Luna model, which is now the standard for both free and 'Go' tier users, replacing the previous GPT-5.5 version.

Introducing the 'Think' Button: Deeper Reasoning for Complex Queries

In addition to unlimited chats, free and 'Go' users will receive a new 'Think' button. This feature allows them to request more intensive processing power for intricate questions, leading to more thoughtful and detailed responses. While text interactions are now unlimited, specific usage caps will still apply to other media types like file uploads, image generation, and voice inputs.

Elevated Intelligence for Subscribers: GPT-5.6 Sol and the Thinking Slider

ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers will gain access to the advanced GPT-5.6 Sol model. This model is engineered to deliver faster, more concise, and robust answers, particularly beneficial for tasks such as quick questions, web research, advice, planning, writing, and decision-making. It's important to note that this version of GPT-5.6 Sol is distinct from the one used for specialized applications like Codex and Work, which remain unchanged.

Customizing Model Thought Process: The New Thinking Slider

Paid users will also be able to fine-tune the AI's response generation with a new 'thinking slider.' This innovative control allows users to adjust the model's processing depth based on the complexity and multi-step nature of their queries, providing greater control over the AI's output. OpenAI's internal assessments highlight a significant reduction in factual errors with these new models: GPT-5.6 Luna showed 62% fewer errors, and GPT-5.6 Sol 68% fewer, compared to GPT-5.5-Instant.

Phased Rollout of New Features

The upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol model is immediately available to Plus and Pro users. The changes for free and 'Go' users, including unlimited text chats and the 'Think' button, will be progressively implemented throughout the current week and fully accessible to all free users by next wee
