New insights from Ramp, a corporate expense management and credit card provider, reveal a shifting landscape in the enterprise AI market. While Anthropic previously surpassed OpenAI in market share among U.S. businesses in May, holding a 41% lead over OpenAI's 39%, and maintained a slight advantage in July with approximately 44% compared to OpenAI's 40%, the latest data suggests a resurgence for OpenAI. The company is now exhibiting a quicker growth trajectory within this segment during the current quarter.

This analysis, derived from spending patterns across over 70,000 American businesses utilizing Ramp's services, predominantly within the tech sector, highlights the fluid nature of enterprise AI adoption. The data, shared by Ramp's economist Ara Kharazian, shows that enterprises are not rigidly committed to a single AI provider. Instead, they are demonstrating a willingness to transition between AI models as new offerings emerge from various labs. This volatility raises questions for investors about the long-term 'stickiness' of current enterprise AI expenditures.

Kharazian pointed to OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol as a key factor in its renewed growth, noting its increasing popularity among developers. Conversely, Anthropic's Fable 5, despite its advanced capabilities, reportedly faced challenges in adoption and real-world application due to its higher cost and stringent data retention policies mandated by regulators. These data retention requirements, which oblige Fable users to store their data for 30 days, generated some controversy and may have impacted its appeal for certain business use cases.

Despite the competitive jostling for market share between OpenAI and Anthropic, the overall market for AI services continues to expand. Ramp's data indicates a consistent increase in the percentage of companies investing in AI solutions, rising from over 50% in March to nearly 56% by July. This broader market expansion suggests that both companies have significant opportunities for revenue growth, even as they contend for dominance within the evolving AI ecosystem.

The dynamic interplay between AI providers, characterized by continuous innovation and shifting business preferences, underscores a burgeoning yet unpredictable market. As new models are introduced and regulatory landscapes evolve, the competitive advantage can rapidly change, requiring both OpenAI and Anthropic to consistently adapt their strategies to attract and retain enterprise clients.
