Nvidia has made a significant commitment, pledging up to $105 billion in financial backing for a new OpenAI data center situated in Ohio. This substantial investment was formally disclosed in an August 17 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Furthermore, Nvidia is channeling $1.5 billion into SB Energy, a U.S.-based data center firm under the ownership of Japan’s SoftBank Group, which is playing a pivotal role in the Ohio initiative. The chosen site for this advanced facility is the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Pike County, Ohio. Nvidia will hold the exclusive position as the compute provider, with SB Energy undertaking the construction, ownership, and operation of the data center under a two-decade lease agreement with OpenAI.
This expansive campus is designed to furnish OpenAI with a formidable 8 gigawatts of compute power. Nvidia's initial financial support will facilitate 4.25 gigawatts of this capacity, retaining an option to secure the remaining 3.75 gigawatts. The activation of this computing infrastructure is anticipated to begin in 2028. Nvidia asserts that the facility will leverage its comprehensive suite of infrastructure, encompassing GPUs, CPUs, and networking solutions. The Ohio project's immense scale is expected to create 35,000 construction roles over its six-year development phase, alongside 2,500 permanent operational positions. Collaborating with SB Energy, OpenAI has also committed to establishing local power generation capabilities to supply 10 gigawatts of energy and investing $4.2 billion in enhancing regional grid infrastructure. While the project has garnered local support as an economic revitalization effort for a former uranium enrichment site, it has also drawn criticism regarding intensive land use, potential pollution from gas turbines powering the data center, and the stability of its funding model.
