Naim has officially introduced its latest all-in-one speaker, the Mu-so Utopia, positioning it as a new standard for comprehensive music enjoyment. Despite the recent launch of the Focal Mu-so Hekla, Naim continued its innovation, culminating in a speaker that, while visually similar to the Hekla, integrates significant advancements in driver technology, amplification, and power output, promising an even more refined auditory experience.
The Mu-so Utopia marks the first Naim Mu-so product to carry the 'Utopia' designation, a name previously associated with Focal's high-end active loudspeakers. In contrast to Focal's broader focus on AV and immersive audio, Naim's emphasis with the Mu-so Utopia is firmly on two-channel audio and amplification, aiming to deliver an unparalleled musical immersion. While retaining many functionalities of the Mu-so Hekla, the Utopia distinguishes itself through a dedicated focus on enhancing the music listening experience, offering an elevated sense of presence and depth.
A key differentiator for the Utopia lies in its completely redesigned drive units. Unlike the Hekla, every driver in the Mu-so Utopia is new, incorporating Focal-derived tweeters with advanced PRISM technology and a pair of 'M' shaped midrange drivers. Furthermore, the Utopia utilizes a hybrid amplification system, combining Class D and Class A/B amplification. The inclusion of Class A/B amplification specifically targets superior control over high frequencies, contributing to a clearer and more precise sound reproduction.
Power output is another area where the Mu-so Utopia significantly upgrades. Surpassing the Hekla's 660W, the Utopia delivers a robust 720W of power. This increase is supported by an upgraded power supply, which Naim engineers designed to allow the midrange driver amplifiers to operate well below their maximum capacity. This deliberate 'underdriving' strategy dramatically reduces distortion, achieving a five-fold improvement compared to the Hekla. The enhanced power and refined amplification also enable the Utopia to fill larger spaces, extending its effective range from the Hekla's 40m² to an impressive 50m². Despite maintaining the same count of 15 speakers, these internal refinements indicate the Utopia's superior performance capabilities.
Visually, the Mu-so Utopia maintains a similar aesthetic to its predecessor, with a subtle addition of a sleek red trim. Functionally, it retains essential streaming capabilities such as Google Cast, Spotify Connect, Qobuz Connect, AirPlay 2, Bluetooth, and Tidal Connect, along with Presto Music support. Connectivity to televisions is facilitated through an HDMI eARC port. The system supports high-resolution audio formats up to 32-bit/384kHz WAV and DSD64/DSD128, while Bluetooth streaming adheres to SBC and AAC codecs. Dolby Atmos is supported, but Naim has implemented a bypass for two-channel music playback, creating a shorter signal path to minimize distortion and coloration. These enhancements, however, come with a higher price point, with the Mu-so Utopia retailing at £4499 / €5000 / $5500, a significant increase from the Mu-so Hekla's £2999.
In summary, the Naim Mu-so Utopia represents a significant evolution in the all-in-one speaker market, meticulously engineered to provide an extraordinary audio experience. Its advanced driver technology, potent amplification, and thoughtful design coalesce to offer a sound quality that redefines expectations for integrated music systems.
