Elon Musk, the prominent tech magnate, has publicly lauded AI company Anthropic and its cutting-edge models, Mythos/Fable, signaling a remarkable shift from his past reservations. This endorsement comes amidst a substantial $40 billion compute agreement between Anthropic and SpaceX's xAI division, triggering discussions about trust and competition within the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence sector.

Musk Reverses Stance on Anthropic, Commits to Non-Interference in $40 Billion Deal

In a significant turn of events on July 9, 2026, Elon Musk, known for his ventures in Tesla and SpaceX, publicly expressed his admiration for Anthropic's AI advancements. On the social media platform X, Musk confessed, "I was clearly wrong about Anthropic," retracting his earlier skepticism from September 2025, where he had dismissed Anthropic's prospects. This reversal is particularly noteworthy given Anthropic's reported dominance in the enterprise AI market, even at the time of Musk's initial critique.

This renewed appreciation coincides with a massive commercial agreement. As of July 2026, Anthropic has become one of SpaceX's most substantial clients, securing a deal in May to procure 300 megawatts of compute power from xAI's Colossus 1 data center located near Memphis, Tennessee. This agreement, valued at an astonishing $1.25 billion per month through May 2029, represents a $40 billion revenue stream for SpaceX's xAI unit, which merged with SpaceX in February. Interestingly, Google has also inked a similar deal, renting SpaceX infrastructure for $920 million monthly over the same period.

Responding to concerns that he might leverage this infrastructure control to disadvantage a competitor, Musk vehemently denied such intentions. He stated, "They are obviously currently the leader in AI. No company has released a model as good as Mythos/Fable and they will undoubtedly have Mythos 2 ready soon. And I would never cut them off in a way that hurt them badly, even as a competitor. That’s not my style." As evidence of his fair-play philosophy, Musk cited Tesla's past decision to make its patents openly available and to open its Supercharger network to other electric vehicle manufacturers.

However, Musk's history includes past litigation against rival OpenAI, suggesting a complex relationship with competition. Nevertheless, Anthropic's position in this agreement is protected by contractual obligations that would entail severe penalties for any unilateral termination by SpaceX. Furthermore, the collaboration offers mutual benefits, allowing SpaceX engineers to gain invaluable experience in supporting Anthropic's rapidly expanding AI systems, similar to how Amazon's engineers collaborate with major AI players.

The arrangement also presents a unique vantage point for SpaceX. During a trial against OpenAI, Musk acknowledged the practice of "AI distilling," where companies analyze competitors' models. Although Anthropic has implemented safeguards against such practices, hosting their compute infrastructure could provide SpaceX with unprecedented insights into Anthropic's operational methodologies. While the immediate benefits for Musk's company appear substantial, the long-term dynamics of this partnership over the three-year contract remain a subject of keen observation.

The alliance between Elon Musk's entities and Anthropic is a fascinating case study in the intersection of cutthroat competition and strategic collaboration within the AI industry. It underscores the immense financial stakes and technological dependencies that shape the landscape of artificial intelligence development. This delicate balance, where rivals become essential partners, highlights the intricate dance of innovation and commercial strategy in the pursuit of AI supremacy. It also prompts reflection on the ethical considerations and potential vulnerabilities inherent in such interdependent relationships, especially concerning data privacy and competitive intelligence. As the contract matures, it will be crucial to observe how this high-profile partnership evolves and influences the future trajectory of AI. The commitment to non-interference, despite competitive pressures, will be a defining aspect of this arrangement, setting a precedent for future collaborations in the fast-paced tech world.
