In a recent decision, Montvale's Borough Council has unanimously endorsed nearly $2 million in bonds to support essential capital projects. This move comes alongside the approval of a municipal budget totaling $23.6 million, reflecting a 2.87% tax hike. The funds will cover a range of initiatives, including the acquisition of a new ambulance, upgrades to police vehicles, road maintenance efforts, and enhancements to public safety equipment. Additionally, the council highlighted the inclusion of various grants aimed at reducing costs related to specific infrastructure improvements. These measures reflect Montvale's commitment to balancing fiscal responsibility with strategic investments in community welfare.

The approved bond issuance totals $1,840,300, earmarked for diverse improvements across the borough. A significant portion, amounting to $400,000, is designated for the procurement of a new ambulance, with discussions ongoing regarding co-funding arrangements involving local municipalities and the Tri-Boro Volunteer Ambulance Service. Other key expenditures include $216,000 for upgrading the Memorial Drive complex with synthetic turf, as well as allocations for resurfacing Woodland Road and Paragon Drive. Borough Administrator Joseph Voytus emphasized that negotiations are progressing smoothly, ensuring efficient use of resources.

Beyond transportation and infrastructure, the budget also prioritizes public safety through substantial investments in equipment. The fire department stands to benefit from $70,000 allocated for advanced radio systems, alongside funding for thermal imaging cameras and personal protective gear. Similarly, the police department will receive enhanced technology, such as in-vehicle computers and license plate readers, along with fitness equipment to bolster officer readiness. These allocations underscore Montvale's dedication to equipping first responders with state-of-the-art tools necessary for safeguarding residents.

Complementing these financial decisions, the borough continues its stewardship over the DePiero farm property, acquired last year for $5 million. While the DePiero family maintains farming operations until August 2025, future plans involve leasing portions of the land to local farmers and establishing community gardens and recreational spaces. Mayor Mike Ghassali envisions this site as a cornerstone for sustainable living within Montvale.

The adopted budget not only addresses immediate needs but also aligns with long-term goals for enhancing quality of life. By detailing how each tax dollar contributes—whether toward municipal services, education, or county obligations—the council aims to foster transparency and accountability. Council President Timothy Lane reiterated that despite modest increases, Montvale remains committed to prudent financial management while advancing meaningful community investments.
