In a significant shift from conventional fitness tracking, Fitbit co-founders James Park and Eric Friedman have unveiled their latest venture: the Luffu Link. This innovative, screenless wearable, priced at $249.99 for pre-order, is not designed for step counting but rather for enhancing family health and safety. Expected to retail at $299.99 upon its US launch in early 2027, the Luffu Link combines health monitoring with advanced communication features, reflecting a commitment to a more integrated, family-oriented approach to personal well-being.

James Park and Eric Friedman, renowned for establishing Fitbit in 2007 before its acquisition by Google in 2019, are now embarking on a new path in health technology with Luffu. Their inspiration for Luffu originated from their personal caregiving experiences, recognizing a gap in the market for health solutions that cater to the collective needs of a family rather than just individuals. This philosophy underpins the development of Luffu Link, the inaugural hardware product from their new company, Luffu, which was founded earlier this year.

The Luffu Link distinguishes itself by integrating comprehensive health tracking with essential safety and communication functionalities. It monitors activity levels, sleep patterns, and heart rate, while also enabling users to document symptoms, medications, meals, mood, and reminders through voice commands. Equipped with GPS and LTE connectivity, the device ensures that users can share their location and connect with designated individuals even when their smartphone is not readily available. A quick double-press action allows for sending check-ins to family members, and the wearer can also use the device to request assistance. Notably, the LTE service is included without requiring an additional carrier plan, offering seamless connectivity. The device boasts an impressive battery life of up to five days on a single charge and will be available in Halo Gold, Onyx Black, and Sterling Blue finishes.

Beyond the Luffu Link, the company is developing a broader ecosystem to support family health management. Their companion phone application aims to centralize family health and safety data, utilizing artificial intelligence to organize information, identify trends, and highlight critical changes. Luffu assures users that they will have complete control over what information is shared and with whom. Furthermore, the Luffu Link prioritizes privacy, activating voice recording only when the main button is pressed and held by the wearer. The Luffu app is currently undergoing public beta testing and is slated for a wider release in the US later this year. Additionally, Luffu is working on a home device designed to facilitate coordinated care across multiple households, with more information expected to be disclosed in the coming months, indicating a comprehensive vision for family-centric health technology.

This innovative wearable from the Fitbit founders signifies a pivotal evolution in personal health technology, shifting the focus from individual metrics to a comprehensive family care system. The Luffu Link’s emphasis on communication, safety, and integrated health monitoring addresses the multifaceted needs of caregivers and their loved ones, offering a more connected and supportive approach to well-being in an increasingly interconnected world.
