Lidl has initiated the deployment of a fully autonomous electric truck for its regular delivery routes to stores throughout Germany. The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) is responsible for certifying vehicles equipped with autonomous driving capabilities, while regional state authorities or Autobahn GmbH oversee the approval of specific operational areas. Despite the absence of a physical driver, German regulations mandate human technical oversight for Level 4 autonomous vehicles. A technical supervisor can remotely deactivate the vehicle or authorize specific maneuvers if the automated system requires intervention, although continuous monitoring during autonomous driving is not strictly required. Furthermore, these vehicles must possess the capability to transition to a minimal-risk state—such as safely stopping and activating hazard lights—should their system limits be reached or operational intent compromised. Einride's autonomous driving system, which includes a redundant sensor suite of lidar, radar, and cameras, has undergone rigorous testing through simulations and real-world trials, with parts of its safety framework reviewed by external bodies. Following the successful validation of the current single-route operation, Lidl plans to expand its autonomous transport strategy by adopting a multi-stop "milkrun" model at another location, integrating multiple collection and delivery points into a single scheduled route. While Lidl operates an extensive network of over 3,250 stores and 39 distribution centers in Germany, the company has not yet announced a widespread rollout of autonomous vehicles across its entire network, with discussions ongoing regarding further deployments with other Schwarz Group companies.
