The Atlanta Hawks are reportedly prepared to assist the Los Angeles Lakers in acquiring Jonathan Kuminga through a sign-and-trade agreement. This potential deal involves Jarred Vanderbilt and a future draft asset as key components, according to sources from the California Post.

Due to existing financial limitations, a sign-and-trade represents the most viable route for the Lakers to secure Kuminga. Reports indicate that Atlanta is open to facilitating a transaction that would send Kuminga to Los Angeles, with the Hawks receiving Vanderbilt and the Lakers’ 2032 first-round pick swap. For the agreement to comply with NBA regulations, Kuminga’s new contract would need to span a minimum of three to four years, excluding option years, and the initial season must be fully guaranteed. This structure would enable Kuminga to command a more substantial salary than the Lakers could offer if he were to sign directly as an unrestricted free agent. Vanderbilt, who is under contract for two more years with a value of $25.7 million from his $48 million extension signed in September 2023, has a salary of $12.4 million for the 2026-27 season and a player option worth $13.3 million for the 2027-28 season. The Lakers have also expressed readiness to move Vanderbilt to gain greater roster flexibility and possess three additional second-round picks for trade, including two obtained from the Washington Wizards and their own 2033 second-round selection. The team has intentionally kept one roster spot open, viewing it as a critical element of their offseason strategy, with Kuminga being a prime target as they aim to build around Luka Doncic.

Kuminga’s availability follows Atlanta's decision to decline his $24.3 million team option. The 23-year-old forward recorded averages of 12.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists, with shooting percentages of 47.6% from the field and 34.6% from beyond the arc in 16 games for the Hawks after his midseason trade from the Golden State Warriors. Over his five-season NBA career, Kuminga has averaged 12.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game, with his most impactful season in 2023-24, where he posted 16.1 points on 52.9% shooting, becoming a crucial scorer for Golden State. Given their cap space limitations, the Lakers have explored shorter-term contract proposals, such as a two-year, $20 million offer, as reported by the Los Angeles Times. However, additional roster adjustments would be necessary to accommodate a larger deal. A sign-and-trade provides Los Angeles with an alternative method to secure Kuminga, reducing their reliance on available cap space. The Lakers' proposition reportedly emphasizes a significant role alongside Doncic and the opportunity for Kuminga to enhance his market value before his next major contract negotiation, bolstering their wing athleticism and two-way capabilities following LeBron James' departure. Los Angeles has already brought in Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes, Collin Sexton, Kevon Looney, and Sandro Mamukelashvili this offseason.

The pursuit of Jonathan Kuminga reflects the Los Angeles Lakers' commitment to strategic team building and their proactive approach to enhancing their roster. By leveraging a sign-and-trade, they not only navigate financial restrictions but also offer Kuminga a platform for growth and impact alongside a burgeoning star like Luka Doncic. This move signals a bright future for the team, emphasizing collaboration and creating opportunities for players to thrive.
