JioHotstar, the digital entertainment platform under the Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries, is embarking on its first international expansion. The service is set to debut in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Singapore, taking over from Hotstar as part of a broader global strategy. This new iteration of JioHotstar will feature an extensive library of over 160,000 hours of diverse entertainment content, catering to a wide range of tastes.

A notable characteristic of this international launch is the exclusion of live sports content, a stark contrast to its highly successful model in India. In its home market, JioHotstar boasts a massive audience of over 500 million monthly active users, largely driven by its comprehensive sports offerings, which include major cricket events, the English Premier League, and various tennis tournaments. The company attributes this initial absence of sports to existing content agreements but has indicated that future inclusion remains a possibility. This strategic decision highlights a shift in focus for its global audience, emphasizing curated entertainment programming.

Effective September 2, the existing Hotstar service will be phased out in the UK, Canada, and Singapore, with JioHotstar seamlessly replacing it. Current Hotstar subscribers in these regions will retain access to their accounts using their existing login details, transitioning smoothly to the new platform. The JioHotstar application will be readily available across all three markets, accessible via popular mobile app stores like the App Store and Google Play Store, as well as on connected television devices. While the service is not currently launching in the United States, following the 2021 closure of Hotstar's standalone U.S. service, JioHotstar has articulated plans for future expansion into additional international territories.

The content lineup for the international launch is robust, encompassing a rich collection of Indian cinema, original television series, and popular reality shows such as “Bigg Boss.” Furthermore, the platform will offer live streams from prominent Star banner television channels, including Star Plus, Colors, Star Vijay, Asianet, Star Jalsha, and Star Pravah. This diverse array of programming will be available in 12 languages, among them English, Hindi, Gujarati, Malayalam, Kannada, and Marathi, complemented by dubbing and translation options to enhance accessibility for a global viewership.

The strategic foundation for JioHotstar's current expansion was laid in 2024, when Reliance completed a merger of its media assets with Disney, forming an 8.5 billion dollar joint venture. This collaboration led to the consolidation of streaming services Hotstar and JioCinema under the new JioHotstar brand for Indian consumers. At the time of this merger, these combined services commanded an impressive 85% share of India's streaming audience, underscoring Reliance's dominant position in the domestic digital entertainment landscape.

According to data from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the target demographic for JioHotstar's initial international rollout in the UK, Canada, and Singapore comprises over 4 million individuals of Indian origin. Beyond this primary audience, the platform's South Asian content is anticipated to resonate with the broader South Asian diaspora, appealing to a diverse community with shared cultural interests. Amit Malhotra, JioHotstar's Head of International Business, emphasized the goal of serving this underserved global audience, noting a growing demand for diverse stories and cultural content beyond local offerings. He stated that the ambition is not merely to export an Indian streaming service but to build a platform that caters to the evolving tastes of a wider international viewership.

The pricing structure for JioHotstar in its new markets reflects its premium entertainment offering, positioning it competitively within the global streaming landscape. In the U.K., quarterly subscriptions are priced at £19.99 (approximately $27 USD), with an annual option available for £69.99 (around $95 USD). Canadian subscribers can access the service for CA$19.99 (about $14 USD) quarterly or CA$49.99 (around $36 USD) annually. In Singapore, the costs are SG$29.98 (approximately $24 USD) for a quarterly subscription and SG$69.98 (around $55 USD) for an annual plan. While these prices are comparable to what was previously charged by Hotstar, it is important to note that JioHotstar will solely provide entertainment content at launch, meaning consumers interested in sports programming may need to seek out separate subscriptions. This contrasts with JioHotstar’s pricing in India, where subscriptions begin at a more accessible ₹79 (about $0.80 USD) per month for mobile-only viewing and extend to ₹2,199 (around $23 USD) annually for its premium tier.
