Jakarta's Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo officially inaugurated the 2026 Jakarta Film Summit, positioning the Indonesian capital as a burgeoning regional film hub. During his address at the Royal Glass House within Park Hyatt Jakarta, Pramono underscored the city's significant potential to attract more film productions, creative talent, and financial backing from across the region. He emphasized Jakarta's robust infrastructure, dynamic economic landscape, and highly efficient public transportation network as key advantages. Drawing parallels with the successful model of Busan, South Korea – a city celebrated for its international film festival and thriving cinematic ecosystem – Pramono articulated a clear vision for Jakarta to emulate and surpass such achievements in its own burgeoning film industry.
The summit, a collaborative effort between the Jakarta Film Commission and the Indonesian Film Agency (BPI), is scheduled to run until October 22nd. The initial days of the event are dedicated to in-depth discussions on critical aspects of film production, including policy frameworks, permitting processes, incentive programs, and diverse financing and investment opportunities. With over 500 participants from ten countries and a roster of 40 distinguished speakers, the summit brings together a diverse array of stakeholders. This includes high-ranking government officials, representatives from leading financial institutions, private investors, streaming service executives, and seasoned film industry professionals, all engaged in fostering a collaborative environment for growth. Subsequent sessions will focus on financial strategies, exploring how projects can be made investor-ready, the pivotal role of banking institutions, and leveraging audience data to effectively assess investment risks.
The concluding day, designated as Jakarta Scouting Day, offers an immersive experience for film commissioners and production companies, taking them to potential filming locations such as Pasar Rumput, Muara Angke Harbor, Kota Tua, and the Bundaran HI Skydeck. A special segment titled “The Two Cities” will facilitate dialogue between Jakarta and Hong Kong, aiming to explore avenues for synergistic collaboration between these two prominent urban centers. Organizers harbor strong aspirations that this summit will not only generate actionable policy recommendations but also significantly bolster industry capacity and elevate Jakarta's global reputation as a premier destination for filmmaking. Fauzan Zidni, Chairman of BPI, articulated the essence of the summit, stating that it vividly demonstrates the local government's commitment to being a strategic partner for the film industry, ensuring that discussions on policy, permits, and financing directly translate into tangible benefits for filmmakers on the ground.
By fostering an environment where government and industry leaders collaborate, Jakarta is setting the stage for a thriving film industry that will not only contribute to economic growth but also enrich the cultural landscape. This forward-looking approach underscores a commitment to artistic expression and innovation, paving the way for a vibrant future where Jakarta becomes a beacon of cinematic excellence in the region and beyond.
