Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio is extending its cloud-based personal computer service, JioPC, to all internet users across India. This initiative is designed to transform older computing devices into machines capable of handling artificial intelligence tasks, eliminating the need for costly hardware replacements.
First introduced in July 2025, JioPC is now accessible as a standalone subscription to anyone with an internet connection, regardless of their current telecom or broadband provider. The service operates by streaming a virtual PC from Jio’s cloud infrastructure to a user's existing computer. Plans for this service include configurations with up to eight virtual CPUs, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage, making advanced computing power available for as little as ₹1,000 (approximately $11) for two months, or an annual subscription ranging from ₹4,000 to ₹5,000 (around $42 to $53) depending on specifications.
This strategy addresses the growing trend of extended PC replacement cycles in India, where consumers and businesses are using their machines for longer periods. By leveraging cloud computing, Jio aims to provide continuous access to advanced processing capabilities, thereby reducing the demand for frequent hardware upgrades. While this model offers an affordable entry point for many, particularly students and households, it faces the challenge of shifting consumer preference from hardware ownership to a service-based model and relies heavily on a stable internet connection—a potential hurdle in regions with less reliable connectivity.
