HP has launched its new OmniBook 5 14 AI PC, positioning it as a direct competitor to Apple's MacBook Neo in the affordable laptop segment. With a starting price of $700/£679, the OmniBook 5 will be available from HP and Best Buy in October. This pricing strategy places it squarely against the MacBook Neo, whose entry-level cost has reportedly risen to approximately $700.
A standout feature of the OmniBook 5 is its display. It incorporates a 14-inch 2K OLED panel with a 1920 x 1200 resolution, making it larger than both the Neo's 13-inch screen and the 13.6-inch display on the MacBook Air. While its 300 nits brightness might pose challenges in extremely bright outdoor conditions, a 2.5K OLED touchscreen upgrade is also offered. Furthermore, HP highlights the OmniBook 5's impressive battery longevity, with claims of up to 42 hours during local video playback tests, a duration considerably exceeding the 13 hours recorded for the MacBook Neo in similar assessments. However, the base $700 model features an Intel Core 5 315 processor, 8GB of RAM, and a modest 256GB of storage. Upgraded configurations, including an Intel Core 7 350, 16GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD, are available, though these increase the overall cost. Connectivity on the entry-level model is limited to two USB-C ports, neither supporting Thunderbolt 4 speeds, and a complete absence of USB-A ports, suggesting that adapters might be necessary for some older peripherals. The OmniBook 5's aesthetic also appears to draw inspiration from Apple, offering an aluminum chassis in silver, blue, pink, and green hues, reminiscent of the pastel color options seen in Apple's product line. Beyond the OmniBook 5, HP also unveiled the streamlined ProBook 4 G2iS 14 AI PC, which features a 3K OLED display, up to 32GB RAM, and 1TB storage, with pricing details yet to be disclosed.
The introduction of the HP OmniBook 5 signals a strategic move by HP to capture a significant share of the budget-friendly laptop market. By focusing on a superior display and extended battery life, HP aims to offer a compelling value proposition that challenges established players like Apple. This competitive landscape ultimately benefits consumers, driving innovation and providing a wider array of choices tailored to diverse needs and budgets. The emphasis on advanced features at an accessible price point reflects a commitment to empowering users with capable and efficient technology.
