This report delves into Hannover Re's recent observations regarding the property catastrophe reinsurance market, particularly focusing on the stability of retention levels and policy conditions during the latest mid-year renewal cycles. It sheds light on the nuances of market dynamics, including pricing adjustments and the pivotal role of attachment points in maintaining profitability.

Resilience in Reinsurance: Navigating Price Adjustments with Stable Retentions

Understanding Property Catastrophe Reinsurance Dynamics

During a recent call with analysts to review Hannover Re's second-quarter 2025 financial outcomes, Sven Althoff, a key figure on the Executive Board for Property & Casualty, provided insights into the prevailing conditions within the natural catastrophe reinsurance sector. He noted that while pricing for such risks has faced downward pressure, the fundamental terms and conditions, along with critical attachment points, have maintained a consistent level of stability. This resilience is a noteworthy aspect of the current market environment.

Hannover Re's Financial Performance and Market Position

Earlier reports indicated that Hannover Re exceeded its budget for major losses in the first half of 2025. However, the second quarter presented a considerably less challenging landscape compared to the initial three months of the year. This period saw the reinsurer cede a mere EUR 21 million in natural catastrophe losses to insurance-linked securities (ILS) providers. Concurrently, the operating profit for Hannover Re's property and casualty reinsurance operations saw a robust increase of 11.6% in the first half of the year, reaching EUR 1.3 billion.

Evaluating the P&C Pricing Environment

Althoff elaborated on the pricing environment for property and casualty insurance, stating that conditions throughout 2025 have largely held steady. He emphasized that outside the realm of property catastrophe, the market appears to be reaching a high plateau, characterized by minimal price reductions and consistent terms, conditions, and retentions. This observation was also pertinent to the mid-year renewals, where a softening trend in terms and conditions continued to be noted.

Variations in Property Catastrophe Renewals

Regarding property catastrophe pricing, Althoff highlighted that mid-year renewals in peak exposure zones, such as the US and Australia, demonstrated high single-digit to low double-digit price decreases across most renewals on the excess of loss side. An exception to this trend was observed in US programs impacted by the California wildfires, which experienced some rate increases. This blend of market movements resulted in a marginal overall decrease, yet the core market dynamic remained one of stability in retentions and terms, despite pricing pressures.

The Significance of Stable Reinsurance Attachment Points

Analysts from Berenberg recently underscored the critical importance of maintaining stable reinsurance attachment points at their current levels, which were reset during the recent period of market hardening. They consider this the most vital element for sustaining reinsurance profitability, equating its benefit to a substantial 20% to 30% advantage in pricing. This perspective reinforces the strategic value of consistent attachment points in a fluctuating market.

Executive Insights on Mid-Year Reinsurance Renewals

Clemens Jungsthöfel, Hannover Re's Chief Executive Officer, also offered his views on the mid-year reinsurance renewals. He observed that these renewals aligned with the trends seen in January and April, noting an expansion in reinsurance capital and a heightened willingness to deploy this capital in an attractive market. While increased competition has exerted some pressure on pricing, particularly in property catastrophe renewals, other lines of business have shown greater stability. Jungsthöfel concluded that, on the whole, the rate and accuracy remain appealing, allowing Hannover Re to continue diversifying and expanding its portfolio.
