Traditional industrial robots have struggled in the unpredictable outdoor environments of construction sites, but recent advancements in artificial intelligence are poised to transform this landscape.
Addressing this challenge, Gritt, a new venture spearheaded by Carnegie Mellon robotics experts Puneet Puri and Vishal Dugar, has officially launched. The company recently secured $26 million in Series A funding, led by Obvious Ventures, with additional contributions from Union Square Ventures and Active Impact Investment, bringing its total capital raised to $34 million. Gritt's core mission is to develop intelligent systems that accelerate infrastructure development by automating difficult construction tasks. Their strategy involves utilizing readily available hardware, such as rented skidders and robotic arms, and integrating them with proprietary AI models. Initially, these systems are focused on streamlining solar panel installation, from unloading large panels to precisely positioning them for final fastening, thereby enhancing both speed and worker safety. Early results are promising, with Gritt's systems increasing daily panel installations from 800 to between 3,000 and 4,000 panels per eight-person crew, and the company has already secured contracts to install 2.8 gigawatts of solar panels within the next 18 months for leading U.S. power construction firms.
Looking ahead, Gritt aims to expand its capabilities beyond solar panel installation to encompass other labor-intensive construction activities, including panel fastening, post-drilling, and even rack assembly. The company envisions its intelligent systems providing real-time data and insights to improve overall site management and decision-making, such as predicting weather-related risks or tracking inventory. This innovative approach, which prioritizes advanced AI integration with existing machinery over developing custom robots, positions Gritt to potentially outpace competitors in terms of growth and cost-efficiency.
