Launched in 2020 as an initiative from Google's internal incubator, Area 120, Tables was conceived to streamline project tracking through automation. It was considered a notable success, transitioning from a beta phase to an official Google Cloud offering in 2021. The application was envisioned as a versatile solution for various business functions, including project oversight, IT operations, client relationship management, and human resources. The creator of Tables, Tim Gleason, a long-serving Google employee, recently retired in September 2024. Area 120 itself underwent significant restructuring in 2022, with many projects being terminated and a renewed focus on artificial intelligence. While Tables initially survived these organizational shifts by integrating into the Google Workspace team under Google Cloud, it now faces its ultimate retirement. Google has provided detailed guidance for administrators to export data, suggesting either a direct transfer to Google Sheets, where workflows can continue with integrated table and notification features, or utilizing a migration tool to import data into AppSheet. The latter option preserves structural elements like column types and relationships, enabling advanced workflow management through AppSheet's automation, permission, and Workspace integration capabilities. The company officially announced the impending closure on the Tables website earlier this month, directing users to an FAQ section which highlighted a new data experience for automated applications and workflows within AppSheet, introduced in June 2023, as a viable alternative.
