The protocol is built around three fundamental pillars: authorization, authenticity, and accountability. It scrutinizes whether an AI agent possesses the necessary permission to make a purchase, if the transaction genuinely reflects the user's intentions, and who bears responsibility if any errors occur during the process.

The AP2 system is designed to accommodate various payment methods, ensuring flexibility and broad applicability. It supports traditional options like credit and debit cards, direct bank transfers, and modern digital currencies such as stablecoins.

To illustrate the benefits of AP2, Google provides practical scenarios. For instance, a shopper seeking a specific jacket color that is currently unavailable can deploy an AI agent to monitor stock and automatically purchase the item once it meets a predefined price threshold.
Facilitating Complex Purchasing Scenarios
Another example demonstrates how an AI agent can assist with more intricate purchases, such as reserving a bicycle for a future trip. The shopper's agent communicates with the merchant's agent, which then creates a customized, time-sensitive package including the bike and accessories at a discount.
Mandates: Ensuring Secure and Verified Transactions
In these sophisticated scenarios, AP2 mandates the creation of "tamper-proof, cryptographically-signed digital contracts." These mandates serve as verifiable evidence of a user's instructions, ensuring that all AI-initiated purchases are legitimate and authorized.
Real-Time and Delegated Purchases
For immediate purchases where a human is present, two mandates are required: an intent mandate to guide the agent's search for an item, and a cart mandate to approve the final transaction. For delegated tasks, such as buying concert tickets the moment they go on sale, a detailed intent mandate is set up beforehand, allowing a cart mandate to be generated automatically once conditions are met.
Seamless Integration and Future Vision
The new protocol can function as an extension of existing systems like the Agent2Agent protocol and the Model Context Protocol. Google views AP2 as a reliable foundation that will power the next generation of AI-driven commerce.
