The landscape of digital applications is witnessing a remarkable transformation, largely driven by the explosive growth of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. A comprehensive report from Sensor Tower, a prominent market intelligence firm, highlights an unprecedented surge in both the accessibility and economic impact of these innovative applications during the initial half of 2025. This period saw a dramatic increase in user engagement, with downloads skyrocketing and in-app revenue reaching new heights, signaling a pivotal moment for the AI industry.
According to the detailed findings from Sensor Tower, generative AI applications were downloaded an astounding 1.7 billion times in the first six months of 2025, marking a significant leap from the 1 billion downloads recorded in the latter half of 2024. This burgeoning popularity was mirrored in their financial performance, as in-app revenue soared to $1.87 billion, effectively doubling the $932 million generated in the preceding six months. Furthermore, user engagement metrics presented an equally compelling picture: individuals collectively dedicated over 15.6 billion hours to these AI applications, a substantial increase from 8.5 billion hours in the second half of 2024, spread across 426 billion distinct sessions. These figures underscore a profound shift in consumer behavior and a burgeoning reliance on AI-driven tools.
Geographically, Asia emerged as a dominant force in this growth trajectory, leading the global market in terms of downloads, accounting for a commanding 42.6% share. This growth was particularly pronounced in key markets such as India and Mainland China, with the continent experiencing an impressive 80% surge in downloads during the first half of 2025. In contrast, European markets saw a 51% increase, while North America registered a 39% rise. While Latin America showcased the most rapid expansion in in-app purchases for generative AI applications, North America maintained its position as the largest market by share, holding a 40% stake in this revenue stream.
Within this rapidly expanding ecosystem, ChatGPT has solidified its position as a leading application. Sensor Tower's analysis indicates that ChatGPT generated the highest in-app revenue across nearly every country, with the notable exception of China, where Deepseek demonstrated superior download performance shortly after its introduction. Beyond financial metrics, ChatGPT also exhibited remarkable user stickiness. Users engaged with the OpenAI application for an average of over 12 days per month during the first half of the year, a usage pattern comparable to major platforms like X and Reddit. Only Google surpassed ChatGPT in terms of average monthly usage days. The report further highlighted an improvement in ChatGPT's weekend usage compared to the previous year, suggesting that the application is becoming an integral part of users' lives beyond professional or academic contexts. This growing integration indicates that consumers are increasingly relying on this AI-powered tool for a wider range of activities.
The study also noted a diminishing gap in average daily usage between ChatGPT and leading search engine and browser applications. In the first half of 2025, ChatGPT users averaged 16 minutes of daily engagement, closely approaching the 18.2 minutes recorded for top search and browser applications. Beyond its core function, users are leveraging ChatGPT for diverse purposes, including guidance on health and wellness, shopping recommendations, personal financial planning, and even meal preparation advice. A significant portion, over a third, of prompts entered into ChatGPT in the second quarter of 2025 were related to lifestyle and entertainment, illustrating its versatility. Furthermore, ChatGPT is expanding its reach across various platforms, with more than 15% of its U.S. user base accessing it via both web and mobile channels, a higher cross-platform engagement rate than many other prominent applications. However, it still lags behind tech giants like Google, Facebook, YouTube, Google Docs, and Amazon, which boast over 25% cross-platform user engagement.
Another intriguing trend identified by Sensor Tower is the pervasive adoption of "AI" terminology in app descriptions. The term "AI" now appears more than 100,000 times across app descriptions on both the App Store and Google Play. Applications incorporating "AI" in their descriptions accounted for 7.5 billion downloads in the first half of 2025, representing approximately 10% of total app downloads. Over the past year, a growing number of applications across various categories, including AI assistants, content generation tools, photo editors, nutrition and diet apps, test preparation and tutoring services, translation tools, and other hobby-related applications, have integrated AI-related keywords. While adding "AI" to an app's name or description can initially boost downloads, the report cautions that this effect is often short-lived, suggesting that sustained growth necessitates genuine value proposition and user utility beyond mere marketing. Ultimately, the rapid expansion of generative AI applications underscores a profound and ongoing shift in how technology interacts with and enhances daily human experiences, signaling a new era of digital innovation.
