Genasys Navigates Q3 Challenges, Poised for Record Year
Fiscal Third Quarter Performance Overview
Genasys Inc. recorded total revenues of $7.3 million for its fiscal third quarter of 2026. This figure reflects a decrease compared to the $9.9 million reported in the corresponding period of the previous year. The primary factors contributing to this decline were supply chain constraints affecting the CROWS program and a deliberate, temporary suspension of project activities in Puerto Rico.
Software Segment's Robust Expansion
The software division showcased notable growth, generating $2.7 million in revenue. This represents a substantial 21% year-over-year increase and a 12% sequential rise. The company also secured approximately $2.5 million in software bookings, comprising both new client acquisitions and renewed contracts, underscoring the increasing demand for its software solutions.
Enhanced Profitability and Financial Health
Genasys achieved a gross margin of 57.1% for the quarter, a significant improvement from 26.3% in the third quarter of fiscal 2025. This surge in profitability is largely attributed to a more favorable mix of revenue, with a higher proportion originating from the software segment. The 12-month backlog also increased to $69 million, up from $58.2 million, providing strong revenue visibility for the upcoming fiscal fourth quarter.
Operational Efficiencies and Strategic Adjustments
Operating expenses saw a reduction of 3.8%, decreasing to $8.2 million from $8.5 million in the prior year. This was driven by targeted adjustments to align spending with cash flow and operational priorities. Selling, general, and administrative expenses fell by 4.6% to $6.1 million, while research and development expenses decreased by 1.2% to $2.1 million. The company successfully extended its term loan to July 2027, enhancing financial flexibility.
Key Business Wins and Market Penetration
Genasys expanded its market presence with several significant wins, including a multi-year Genasys Protect contract with Ada County, Idaho, displacing a legacy emergency alert provider. The company also forged a partnership with Entara and Cal Fire to integrate the CalFire Aware platform with Genasys Protect for real-time emergency updates. Furthermore, Genasys Protect now covers approximately 15% of the U.S. population and 20% of the country's land area, solidifying its position as a leading platform for emergency management.
Hardware Segment Momentum and Critical Infrastructure Focus
The hardware segment continued to gain traction, particularly in the critical infrastructure sector. Genasys secured a $2.4 million order for LRAD 59 NXT systems from a major U.S. utility, expanding a deployment that began with a single substation installation. Interest from international navies, including those of Spain, Canada, and France, further highlights the global demand for Genasys' defense and security products.
Optimistic Outlook for Fiscal Year 2026
Despite the temporary setbacks in the third quarter, Genasys remains confident in achieving a record year for both revenue and profitability. The resolution of supply chain issues for the CROWS program and the resumption of cash collections from Puerto Rico, totaling $2.99 million in the four weeks preceding the earnings call, are expected to contribute significantly to the fourth quarter's performance. The strong backlog and growing pipeline further reinforce this positive outloo
