A trio of former Spotify engineers, responsible for the behavioral intelligence underpinning Spotify's recommendation engine, have embarked on a new venture. Sidd Motwani, Ian Anderson, and Shivaditya Sinha developed Vector AI, a system designed to anticipate user intentions and future actions rather than relying solely on past behavior. This technology drives approximately 90% of Spotify's recommendations for its 800 million users.
The founders are now applying a similar framework to the e-commerce sector with their new company, Malachyte. The firm recently announced a successful seed funding round, raising $10 million to facilitate broader distribution and recruit additional product and commercial leadership. Malachyte seeks to transform online retail by offering real-time, intent-driven shopping experiences. Their proprietary "two-headed Vector AI" platform is engineered to predict a shopper's immediate product desires, grasp their overall preferences, and continuously adapt based on their real-time interactions.
Motwani, Malachyte's CEO, highlights a fundamental flaw in current e-commerce personalization: most online stores treat all shoppers uniformly, basing recommendations on historical purchases, demographic data, or existing customer profiles. This often leads to generic storefronts for new visitors and outdated suggestions for returning customers. Malachyte's approach aims to address this by constructing a dynamic user profile from the very first click, instantly adjusting product displays based on evolving intent. For example, a search for 'heavy-duty boots' followed by clicks on steel-toed options would immediately promote work pants and gloves, while demoting dress shoes, all without requiring an account or purchase history. Every subsequent action refines this profile, making the shopping experience increasingly relevant. Motwani emphasizes that retailers often overlook a rich source of customer intelligence—the continuous stream of hovers, clicks, scrolls, and additions to cart—which Malachyte's system constantly processes to build a more confident understanding of user preferences and current intent. He also points out the underutilization of contextual signals, such as the difference in a shopper's mindset when browsing on a phone late at night versus a laptop during the day.
Malachyte's technology has been under development and testing since 2024, initially collaborating with over 20 enterprise clients across various sectors before narrowing its focus to e-commerce. The platform officially launched in the fall of 2025 with Fun.com and has been generally available to Shopify merchants via native integration since June 2026. Larger retailers can integrate the technology through its API. Looking ahead, Motwani envisions a greater opportunity in unifying merchandising and marketing strategies around a shared understanding of customer behavior. The funding round was co-led by Bessemer Venture Partners and Gradient, with additional investment from Harpoon Ventures.
The advancement of AI in e-commerce promises a future where online shopping transcends basic recommendations, evolving into a highly personalized and intuitive journey. By understanding and anticipating customer needs in real-time, platforms like Malachyte empower businesses to deliver unparalleled user experiences, fostering deeper engagement and loyalty. This innovation underscores the immense potential of artificial intelligence to not only optimize commercial operations but also to enrich daily interactions, driving forward a more responsive and intelligent digital marketplace.
