Twenty years after their time on the renowned soap opera 'EastEnders,' actors Louisa Lytton and James Alexandrou are collaborating once more for a brand-new dark theatrical comedy titled 'Casserole.' The production will premiere at Playhouse East in Haggerston this November and December. Alexandrou also contributes to the project as a co-writer and co-director. This reunion marks a significant moment for the duo, as they bring their combined experience to a stage setting that promises a blend of humor and depth.

A Stage Reunion for Former Walford Residents

Louisa Lytton, recognized for her portrayal of Ruby Allen, and James Alexandrou, celebrated for his role as Martin Fowler, are stepping onto the stage together for the first time in 'Casserole.' Their paths briefly crossed during their initial tenure on 'EastEnders' between 2005 and 2006, as Alexandrou was part of the cast from 1996 to 2007. The theatrical piece, a dark comedy set during the Christmas season, delves into the complexities of love between individuals with contrasting beliefs about what lies beyond life. Lytton's enthusiasm for the play was evident; after attending an early workshop, she actively sought to co-star with Alexandrou, making this collaboration a passion project for both.

The play's narrative centers on Kate, who experiences panic attacks and is convinced her deceased mother sends her signals from the afterlife. She enlists Dom's help to decipher these messages, only to discover him consuming a significant symbol: her mother's last casserole. This one-act, 65-minute production was developed over five years through improvisational workshops at Playhouse East. Lytton brings over 25 years of experience in television, theater, and film, with recent stage appearances in 'The Battle' and 'The Girl on the Train.' Alexandrou, who founded Playhouse East with Avital Lvova in 2024, grew up in the spotlight on 'EastEnders' from the age of 11. His diverse stage and screen credits, including roles in Shakespearean plays and popular television dramas, underscore his versatility. Playhouse East aims to foster new talent by offering an accessible platform for emerging artists in various performing arts.

Exploring Life and Loss Through Dark Comedy

The essence of 'Casserole' lies in its exploration of profound themes through a comedic lens, particularly the question of whether love can truly thrive amidst fundamentally opposing views on the afterlife. The storyline, involving Kate's belief in signs from her deceased mother and Dom's practical yet symbolic consumption of the last casserole, creates a unique tension. This thematic depth, combined with the talents of Lytton and Alexandrou, promises a thought-provoking yet entertaining experience for the audience. The play’s development over half a decade, rooted in collaborative workshops, highlights a meticulous creative process designed to bring out nuanced performances and a compelling narrative.

Both Lytton and Alexandrou are seasoned performers with extensive careers spanning various mediums. Lytton's recent roles in critically acclaimed productions like '2:22 A Ghost Story' and her classical theater work demonstrate her range. Alexandrou, beyond his acting, is a driving force behind Playhouse East, an initiative dedicated to nurturing new voices in the arts. His background, from a child actor on a major soap opera to directing and writing, reflects a deep commitment to the craft. The upcoming run of 'Casserole' at Playhouse East not only offers a chance for fans to see these familiar faces in a new light but also showcases the theater's mission to present innovative and challenging works that push artistic boundaries. The play is scheduled to run from November 24 to December 19, 2026.
