Dili Secures $21.7M to Revolutionize AI Compliance in Infrastructure Development

In an era where artificial intelligence is increasingly integral to various industries, its application is now extending to the foundational sectors of our economy. The emergence of new data centers and power facilities, driven by the expanding demands of AI technologies, necessitates robust compliance frameworks. Interestingly, AI itself is poised to play a pivotal role in ensuring these massive infrastructure undertakings adhere to regulatory standards.

Recently, Dili, an innovative company focused on AI-powered compliance for U.S. infrastructure initiatives, announced a significant financial milestone. The company successfully closed a Series A funding round, securing $15 million. This latest investment follows a previous seed round of $6.7 million, bringing Dili's total capital raised to an impressive $21.7 million. This substantial funding injection underscores the growing recognition of AI's potential in navigating the intricate landscape of regulatory adherence within the construction and development sectors.

The Series A funding round was spearheaded by Khosla Ventures, a prominent venture capital firm known for its investments in groundbreaking technologies. Other notable participants in the round included Allianz, Rebel Fund, Darren Bechtel from Brick and Mortar Ventures, and Garry Tan of Y Combinator. Dili itself is an alumnus of Y Combinator's Summer 2023 batch, highlighting its early promise and innovative approach.

While the concept of 'AI for compliance' is gaining traction among startups, Dili distinguishes itself by specifically addressing the unique and often convoluted regulatory challenges associated with large-scale construction projects, especially those that receive federal backing. Anand Chaturvedi, Dili's co-founder and CEO, provided an example by citing the Davis-Bacon rules. These regulations empower the Department of Labor to establish prevailing wages for specific projects, a critical aspect of compliance. Furthermore, various prevailing wage and apprenticeship (PWA) rules apply to clean energy projects supported by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), alongside numerous OSHA and EPA regulations, all dependent on the specific nature of the work being undertaken.

Navigating this complex web of overlapping requirements can be daunting, and even minor missteps can lead to severe financial penalties. Chaturvedi emphasized that non-compliance can result in fines amounting to millions of dollars for these projects. This underscores the critical need for a system that can meticulously verify all incoming information rather than relying on sporadic data sampling. Dili's solution offers a powerful mechanism to preempt such costly errors by providing continuous and comprehensive compliance checks.

Given the high stakes involved, reliability is paramount for Dili's offerings. Chaturvedi assured that the company's architectural design is engineered to prevent any potential inaccuracies or 'fuzziness' that might arise from large language models (LLMs) from impacting the final compliance output. Dili's approach involves utilizing contemporary AI models primarily in its data layer. Here, these models are tasked with transforming unstructured documents into structured, usable data. This structured data is then processed by a deterministic system, which applies the intricate yet static compliance rules. This streamlined process can significantly reduce a task that traditionally consumed an entire workday to just a few minutes, drastically improving efficiency.

Chaturvedi further illustrated the capabilities of Dili's system, stating, Imagine the power of being able to process all internal company documents, vendor records, ERP information, and payroll data, and then precisely extract the necessary information for reporting and compliance. This holistic approach ensures that every piece of relevant data is analyzed and aligned with regulatory requirements.

Dili is already demonstrating the practical application of its system. Chaturvedi reported that the software is currently deployed across approximately 700 projects, encompassing a diverse range of undertakings from manufacturing facilities to data centers. Interestingly, around half of these projects use Dili as an in-house software tool, while the other half opt for Dili to manage their entire compliance process as a contractor. Dili is equipped to handle both engagement models, although Chaturvedi foresees a future where the software-as-a-service model becomes increasingly prevalent in the industry.

The company anticipates a broader shift in the market where software and AI will progressively automate many professional services workflows, leading more organizations to internalize these functions. The evolution of customer needs in tandem with advancements in AI will shape how the market adapts, promising an exciting future for AI-driven compliance solutions.
