The Colorado State University (CSU) tropical weather research group has reiterated its projection for a considerably less active 2026 Atlantic hurricane season. Concurrently, the calculated probabilities for storms reaching coastal areas have continued to decrease as the season progresses, reflecting ongoing atmospheric and oceanic patterns.
Previously, in its June analysis, the CSU team had anticipated 11 named tropical systems, 5 hurricanes, and 2 major hurricanes for the 2026 season. The accompanying Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) was set at an index value of 70, which was already a reduction from their initial May predictions. Following this, the July 8th update further adjusted these figures downwards to 9 named storms, 4 hurricanes, and only 1 major hurricane, with the ACE Index dropping to 50. These July figures remain consistent in their latest, and final, August 5th assessment.
It's important to note that the 9 named storms forecasted include Arthur and Bertha, which have already occurred. This implies that only 7 additional named storms are expected for the remainder of the 2026 season, although the possibility of 4 hurricanes still exists. As the Atlantic hurricane season approaches its typical peak, the probabilities for storm landfalls have shown a consistent downward trend over recent months.
In June, the probabilities for landfall were: 24% for the entire US coastline, 11% for the U.S. East Coast including Peninsula Florida, and 14% for the Gulf Coast from the Florida Panhandle westward to Brownsville. A 26% chance was given for a major hurricane passing through the Caribbean. These figures were all lower than the April forecast and significantly below the historical averages. By July 8th, these percentages had dropped further to 17% for the entire US coastline, 8% for the U.S. East Coast, 10% for the Gulf Coast, and 19% for the Caribbean.
The most recent update on August 5th reveals even lower probabilities: 16% for the entire US coastline, 7% for the U.S. East Coast including Peninsula Florida, 9% for the Gulf Coast from the Florida Panhandle, and 17% for a major hurricane in the Caribbean. These revised figures are all considerably below their long-term averages, underscoring the subdued outlook for the season.
The CSU forecast team stated that a robust El Niño event, expected to strengthen during the peak hurricane season, is the primary driver behind these projections. Despite slightly warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Caribbean and tropical Atlantic, the powerful El Niño is anticipated to generate high levels of vertical wind shear, which typically suppresses hurricane development. Consequently, a well below-average likelihood of major hurricane landfalls along the continental United States and in the Caribbean is expected.
Phil Klotzbach, the leader of the CSU tropical team, further elaborated that while the Atlantic's Main Development Region exhibits slightly warmer conditions, the influence of El Niño is expected to be dominant, leading to increased shear and a less active season. The consensus across various seasonal hurricane forecasts aligns with CSU's outlook, predicting approximately 11 named storms, 5 hurricanes, and 2 major hurricanes for the 2026 Atlantic basin, all below historical averages.
It is consistently emphasized that even in a less active season, a single significant storm making landfall in a densely populated or economically vital area could lead to substantial consequences for the insurance, reinsurance, catastrophe bond, and insurance-linked securities (ILS) sectors. Therefore, while seasonal forecasts offer valuable directional guidance, close monitoring of developing weather systems and evolving conditions in the Atlantic and Gulf remains crucial throughout the hurricane season.
