CatIQ, Canada's premier provider of insured loss and exposure data, has substantially revised its assessment of the financial impact from a series of intense thunderstorms that swept across southern Ontario and southern Quebec earlier this summer. The updated estimate for insured market losses has climbed to C$439 million, reflecting a significant 17.5% increase over the initial projection of C$374 million. This upward adjustment underscores the persistent and expanding financial repercussions of the severe weather incident for the insurance sector.
The extreme weather, occurring between June 30th and July 3rd, 2026, followed a prolonged heatwave. This atmospheric instability triggered extensive flash flooding, hailstones reaching up to 40 mm in diameter, and at least two confirmed tornadoes. The National Capital Region, notably Ottawa, experienced unprecedented rainfall, with nearly 120 mm recorded on July 1st alone, contributing substantially to the overall damage.
Initially, CatIQ's assessment placed the insured losses at C$374 million. However, as additional claims have been processed, the total continues to escalate. The 17.5% increase brings the revised estimate to C$439 million, with a notable surge in claims observed within the commercial insurance lines. This revised figure encompasses a broad range of property damage, covering both commercial and residential structures, as well as vehicle-related claims, alongside supplementary loss adjustment expenses.
Caroline Floyd, Director of CatIQ, highlighted the unusually active storm season across Canada in 2026. She noted that since June, the country has declared eleven catastrophes linked to severe convective storms, with flash flooding frequently identified as the primary driver of insured losses. Several major population centers, including Edmonton and Ottawa, have already experienced their wettest summers on record, indicating a broader trend of escalating weather-related risks.
