Navigating Growth and Investment: A Detailed Look at Buckle's Q2 2026 Performance

Overview of Financial Outcomes for the Second Quarter

Buckle Inc. reported its financial figures for the 13-week second quarter, concluding on August 1, 2026. Net income for the period was $44.4 million, translating to $0.87 per diluted share, a slight decline from $45 million, or $0.89 per diluted share, in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Conversely, net sales demonstrated positive momentum, rising by 4.6% to $319.8 million, up from $306 million in the prior year's second quarter. Comparable store sales also saw an increase of 2.1% for the same period, with online sales contributing $44.6 million, an increase of 2.3% year-over-year.

Key Performance Indicators and Margin Analysis

During the quarter, the average unit retail price increased by approximately 4.5%, and the average transaction value grew by about 3.5%, reflecting a higher price point across various product categories. Despite these gains, units per transaction decreased by roughly 1%. The gross margin for the quarter was 47.8%, a 40 basis point improvement from 47.4% in the second quarter of 2025. Merchandise margins notably improved by 110 basis points, partly due to a 65 basis point benefit from $2.5 million in tariff refunds. However, these gains were somewhat offset by a 70 basis point increase in buying, distribution, and occupancy costs, primarily due to continued expansion and relocation of stores.

Operational Expenses and Capital Expenditures

Selling, general, and administrative (SG&A) expenses constituted 30.4% of net sales, an increase from 29% in the previous year. This rise was attributed to a 45 basis point increase in marketing investments aimed at customer acquisition and retention, along with a 35 basis point increase in store labor costs. The operating margin for the quarter stood at 17.4%, a decrease from 18.4% in the second quarter of 2025. Inventory at the quarter's close was $161.4 million, marking a 13.3% increase from the prior year, intended to support growth and new store openings. Capital expenditures for the quarter totaled $29.8 million, with year-to-date spending including $24.4 million for store construction and $20.1 million for corporate facilities and a replacement aircraft.

Segment Performance: Women's, Men's, and Kids' Apparel

The women's segment displayed significant strength, with sales increasing by 9.5% year-over-year and contributing 50% to total sales. Women's denim sales surged by 11%, with average price points rising to $92.50. Alternative pants in the women's business saw an impressive nearly 50% increase, driven by demand for prints and wider leg designs. In contrast, the men's segment sales remained largely unchanged from the previous year, accounting for 50% of total company sales. Men's denim sales experienced a decline of approximately 3.5%, primarily due to softness in higher-priced national brands. The kids' segment also performed well, recording an 11% increase in sales, building on a 23% increase in the second quarter of 2025. Private label sales represented 44.5% of total sales, up from 43.5% in the prior year.

Store Network Expansion and Future Outlook

Buckle concluded the quarter with 446 retail locations across 42 states, having opened five new stores and completed five remodels, including four relocations to outdoor shopping centers. Following the quarter, one additional new store was opened. The company plans to open five more new stores and complete four additional remodel projects by the end of the year. Management emphasized the policy of not providing future sales or earnings guidance, and all forward-looking statements are made under the safe harbor provisions of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 2000, acknowledging that actual results may vary due to various risks and uncertainties.
